Nebraska Wesleyan University is seeking applications for a one-year, Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science for the 2019-2020 academic year (starting August 14, 2019 through May 15, 2020).  NWU is interested in hiring a candidate with an expertise in American Politics who can add to the department’s existing strengths in comparative politics and international relations.  As a department, the Political Science faculty members are invested in mentoring faculty to become excellent teachers, as well as being deeply committed to diversity and inclusion, and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

This is a full-time benefit eligible position, which includes a comprehensive package including health, vision and dental insurance benefits, retirement benefits, a generous holiday schedule, and undergraduate tuition remission for employee’s dependents among other benefits.

Responsibilities:

Faculty responsibilities include teaching twelve credit hours per term, fall and spring semesters, including day and possible evening undergraduate classes. Political science courses are generally 4 credits, so the visiting faculty member would likely teach three 4-credit courses per semester.  Preferred candidates will be able to teach widely across the subfield of American Politics, ideally with an emphasis in the politics of race and/or gender.  Teaching assignments in the fall of 2019 may include first year writing instructive sections of Intro to US Government and Politics and a class on social movements and protest politics. In the spring, the candidate will have the opportunity to offer electives in their area of expertise as well as teaching the introductory course.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • A doctorate degree in Political Science is preferred, or master’s degree plus 18 completed credit hours towards a doctoral degree required in a related field
  • Experience with teaching various types of writing skills to students through assigned coursework
  • Familiarity with Canvas course technology or similar LMS software is a plus
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and innovative teaching skills are required 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with faculty and students is essential
  • Strong commitment to student-centered active learning and student engagement activities
  • Experience, knowledge and appreciation for a liberal arts tradition
