Position Summary

Big Bend Community College invites applications for a Science Lab Coordinator. The primary function of this position is to prepare lab experiments in chemistry and biology laboratories; this preparation would include routine maintenance, repair, and setup of equipment, purchasing of lab materials and equipment, monitoring of lab budgets, and managing storage of chemicals and disposal of biological and chemical hazardous waste produced within the laboratories.

This position is also responsible for instruction of students within some laboratory sessions, assisting with student advising, implementing and maintaining safety procedures in the laboratories and stockroom areas as well as the supervision of student employees in simple lab setup and cleanup duties and in greenhouse support.

This position reports to the Dean of Arts & Sciences and works closely with program faculty, students, and other staff.

BBCC is a small rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State, and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Essential Job Duties

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Prepare for, set up, take down, and assist in demonstrations and laboratory experiments in biology and chemistry laboratories; including equipment, material, supply, solution, and reagent preparation.
  • Teach laboratory sessions, with an emphasis on chemistry laboratory sessions, as needed by science departments and as schedule allows; instruct students during laboratory sessions in laboratory content, procedure, safety, and disposal.
  • Maintain and organize inventories of stockroom materials. Order materials as needed to ensure laboratories are operating in a timely and thorough manner, coordinating with the full-time science faculty. Maintain chemical inventory, generate waste and usage lists for the Director of Campus Security & Safety.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety procedures in the laboratories, stockroom, and storage areas. Ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Manage the storage, disposal, and/or recycling of chemicals and hazardous waste in the laboratories, including updating protocols in coordination with full-time science department faculty.
  • Monitor lab budgets and expend funds with appropriate guidelines and designated duties in coordination with full-time science faculty.
  • Supervise student employees in carrying out setup and cleanup of laboratories prior to and following laboratory sessions. Provide student employees with direction and specific task assignments. Follow-up with student employees to ensure work is completed in accordance with established policies and practices.
  • Advise students; assist students in planning an educational program and in selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.
  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with college-wide and department assessment, safety, and/or college related concerns.
  • Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and setup of laboratory equipment, (i.e., the water purification system, Vernier LabQuests, and associated Vernier probes and instrumentation).
  • Inspect, test, adjust and repair scientific and laboratory support equipment.
  • Support lab operation in coordination with full-time science faculty; duties may include word processing, database management, online research, and email communication.

OTHER WORK ACTIVITIES:
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in laboratory practice and safety.
  • Maintain and follow safe work practices and policies. This includes but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, lab safety procedures, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensure self-compliance with college policies and procedures as well as state and federal requirements.
  • Ensure the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the college's values.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the college.
  • Ensure that additional duties, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE THE ABILITY TO:
  • Critical thinking skills: Seeks resources for direction, when necessary. Performs independent and collaborative problem solving in coordination with full-time science faculty. Decision-making is logical and deliberate.
  • Follow and carry out detailed lab protocols as required to ensure successful laboratory experiments for students. Accurately read small print and labels.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively using strong written and verbal skills.
  • Perform actions that demonstrate time management and organization. Multi-task in a dynamic environment; prioritize multiple tasks and projects to meet deadlines.
  • Perform actions that demonstrate accountability. Exercise independent decision-making in coordination with the full-time science faculty. Practice within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Work independently and reliably. Regular and consistent attendance is expected.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations. Demonstrates competency in ability to provide service in a multicultural environment.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Experience working in a science laboratory setting.
  • Previous experience working with individuals from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Chemistry and/or educational background in biology.
  • Work experience in a science laboratory or as a lab technician in an educational science laboratory, including but not limited to the following responsibilities:
    • Solutions preparation, including buffers of specific pH.
    • Chemical lab safety procedures.
    • Hazardous chemical and biological waste management.
  • Laboratory safety training.
  • Ability to adapt and learn new technologies, instrumentation, and scientific procedures.
  • Bilingual fluency, English/Spanish.
