Capella University seeks an academic scholar that is an enterprise leader, to serve as the Dean for the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Key to this role is a blend of business acumen with a focus on operating academic programs at scale, strategic vision for building credibility in the external environment, strong people leadership skills, the ability to work effectively across a matrixed organization, a track record of scholarly experience and presentations, all with a keen focus on the success of the Capella learner.

At Capella University, the Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences is responsible for:
•Collaborating to develop and execute on the overall strategy of the school and University
•Leading the School Advisory Board made up of C-Suite Nursing and Healthcare leaders from across the country
•Developing and executing against the School/College thought leadership strategy in partnership with the Academic Leadership Team of the school and the Employer Solutions Team
•Owning the internal operations including driving efficiency and effectiveness of the school in partnership with the associate dean and other academic leaders to meet and exceed financial targets
•Creating and overseeing the talent development and strategy for the school
•Partnering with the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and other internal stakeholders to execute on strategic, operational, and quality Metrics as outlined by the University Executive Committee and Board of Directors
•Championing change with relentless focus and ability to prioritize work in the best interest of the University
•Further advancing the brand and credibility of the University through the demonstrating the following leadership behaviors:

KEY RESPONSIBLITIES OF THE DEAN:

Strategic Management & Development:

  • Collaboratively contribute to and implement a school vision and strategy in alignment with the University vision and market demands.
  • Partner with the Portfolio Strategy team and Chief Academic Officer to ensure programs align with overall university strategy and with profession trends, accreditation standards, and economic mobility aspirations of the greater organization.
  • Create and implement a cross-functional strategic plan that ensures the school successfully meets organizational, external market and learner success and retention goals.
  • Build and nurture internal and external partnerships and relationships that drive and improve success for the university and school/department.
  • Consistently demonstrate leadership practices that result in high quality and consistent organizational effectiveness.
  • Partner with key University Stakeholders, Deans of Schools, and the CAO to deliver against quality metrics and enterprise academic initiatives.

Operational Management:

  • Collaborate with the General Manager in the crafting and execution of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), strategic initiatives and programs.
  • Develop and execute a school strategic and operational plan to meet targets for market positioning, instructional cost, learner success, learner experience, course, program and learning outcomes.
  • Effectively collaborate with the Portfolio Director to design and implement the school vision and strategy.
  • Lead efforts to align school/department’s activities with key existing external strategic partners, thought leaders and employers.
  • Ensure the school/department’s compliance with Capella’s academic and related policies along with planning and executing successful school accreditation efforts.
  • Provide oversight for management of escalated incidents.
  • Sign off of and approve Doctoral Capstone projects
  • Understand and value Capella’s competency based learning model and promote the model in the school/department’s teaching philosophy, tools, best practices, and academic policies internally and externally.
  • Manage the school/department-wide fiscal annual operating plan (AOP) and achieve key annual operating targets.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives in learner success and graduation, faculty engagement, academic quality and curricula at the school level in partnership with the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Lead efforts to improve quality through the demonstration of analytical capabilities, exiting tools and data hubs.

Talent Management:

  • In partnership with the College Vice President and Human Resources Leader:

  • Create an operational infrastructure for the School of Nursing and Health Sciences that supports the external focus and efforts of the Dean and Academic Leadership Team.
  • Create and implement a faculty plan that supports achievement of school/department’s quality and financial goals.
  • Lead, manage and develop the leadership team for the school in partnership with the Associate Dean.
  • Set performance standards and goals for academic leadership team, review performance results, and give feedback in real time.
  • Effectively deliver performance coaching.
  • Promote professional development throughout school; create opportunities for leadership team growth and model professional development for the leadership team.
  • Ensure that leadership within the school is accountable for the engagement and appropriate empowerment of leaders and faculty.
  • Maintain a succession plan for key positions within the school that supports the talent assessment process and builds a robust talent pipeline.

Success Measures

  • The Dean is responsible for achieving the following critical strategic outcomes and key measures:

  • Growth of the Nursing and Health Sciences portfolio that exceeds general market growth, which we estimate at 15%+ annually.
  • Execution of key strategic partnerships, resulting in product and financial performance through these relationships that provides additional and aggressive growth opportunities for the School.
  • Learner success as measured by improved learner persistence for first-course and cohorts, learner program completion and learner competency demonstration, and economic mobility of Capella’s learner base.
  • Learner experience as measured by overall learner satisfaction with instructional quality and course/program content.
  • Operational cost measures, including quarterly targets for direct and indirect instructional costs.
  • Retention of top talent and overall engagement of faculty.
  • Internal and external recognition of Capella University as a thought leader both from the School perspective and individually. 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will

  • have a doctorate in a related discipline from a regionally accredited university;
  • previous teaching experience preferably in a college or university setting;
  • experience leading teams and working in a matrix environment;
  • and the ability to travel as needed (up to 20%).

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in online education as a primary mode of delivery
  • A minimum of five (5) full-time years of significant, progressively-increasing responsibility in a corporate enterprise setting and/or higher education, including executive and direct supervisory experience.
  • Ability to operate independently (leading, collaborating and executing) in a highly ambiguous, matrixed environment with high interdependencies.
  • Be a doer, focused not just on thought partnership but on getting things done and executing both independently and with others.
  • Able to use data to inform insights and evaluate outcomes and impacts, constantly learning and obsessing over a better way.
  • Lead by listening, be highly collaborative, and productively contribute opinions to critical decision making processes.
  • A track record of demonstrated success in meeting operational and financial targets in an educational environment, including:
    • Articulating a compelling vision of academic excellence and executing toward that vision.
    • Developing and assessing high-quality academic programs to meet the needs of adult learners at a distance.
    • Experience supporting, developing and promoting regional and specialized, programmatic accreditations.
    • Prior experience with CCNE accreditation including authoring a self-study and CIPR.
    • Effectively representing an institution to external academic and business constituencies, with a continuous eye to the academic profile of the institution.
    • Successfully building, managing and working collaboratively with a diverse faculty and learner base to meet the goals of an institution.
    • Collaboratively partnering with other functional areas across the organization and within the professional community to achieve desired results.
    • Developing creative, innovative strategies.
    • Driving results despite ambiguity.
    • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

EDUCATION:    A Doctorate degree in a related discipline is required, a terminal degree in Nursing preferred.
