Position Summary:
The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of the CNS Washington, DC office. Under the general direction of the Director of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, the Executive Director performs a range of research-related, fundraising, outreach, and administrative tasks to support the mission of CNS. She/he develops projects and initiatives on research, publications, outreach, and education and training and oversees their implementation for the CNS Washington, DC office. This is a full-time exempt staff position requiring extensive specialized knowledge, management experience, and professional stature.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
• The Executive director supervises the 10- to 12-person regular staff of the Washington, DC office, as well as interns and visiting fellows/scholars of the Center, and directs and guides their work and their contribution to the mission of the CNS.
• Establishes, manages, and oversees the implementation of key programs and activities of the Washington, DC office.
• Maintains high-level substantive and fundraising contacts with relevant executive branch agencies and the U.S. Congress and strengthens institutional ties with governmental and non-governmental organizations in Washington, DC.
• Develops, supervises, and implements foundation grants and governmental contracts involving the CNS Washington, DC office. Interacts with foundation officers and governmental officials, as required.
• In close cooperation with CNS Director, Deputy Director, and Finance and Administration Manager, oversees financial and budget issues involving the CNS Washington, DC office and its staff.
• Oversees personnel issues in the Washington, DC office and provides CNS Director with recommendations regarding hiring, firing, promotions, salaries, etc. Assists in job searches and advertisements.
• Works closely with CNS Director and CNS Deputy Director to ensure that activities and operations of the Washington, DC office are in line with and contribute to CNS mission, strategic goals and interests.
• Conducts original research and publishes timely work on a broad range of nonproliferation issues.
• Promotes CNS work through briefings to visitors and sponsors and through media outreach.
• Represents CNS at meetings and conferences as appropriate.
• Mentors younger staff, including on procedures, policies, and career advancement.

General Responsibilities:
• Performs other relevant duties as requested.

Qualifications
Education:
• PhD or law degree with a specialization in international politics/international security or equivalent experience in government/international organizations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Nationally and internationally recognized expertise in the nonproliferation field.
• Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and leadership, ability to motivate staff in pursuit of project goals, set out and achieve clear research and programmatic objectives.
• Strong research and publication record.
• Strong management and interpersonal skills.
• Strong fundraising skills.
• Willingness and ability to travel to attend offsite seminars and conferences and to represent CNS.
• Ability to work in fast-paced environment and to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
• Willingness and ability to adapt to changing technologies and systems.
• Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures, and mandates.

Experience:
• Minimum ten years of leadership/management experience.
• Minimum eight years of professional experience in government/international organizations, or non-government institutions in the sphere of nonproliferation, arms control, and/ or international security.
• Minimum five years of fundraising experience with private foundations and national governments.
• Extensive familiarity with government and nonproliferation expert community contacts is required.
• Proven record of successful management of complex projects and diverse personnel.
• Prior executive/senior management experience is desired.

Physical Demands:

Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
