Major/Essential Functions:
The Texas Tech University School of Art (TTU SOA) is accepting applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Painting appointment for the 2019-2020 academic term. Opportunities to teach graduate-level Painting courses may also be available, and are dependent upon the applicant’s qualifications. Other responsibilities may include participation in end-of-semester/end-of-year reviews of graduate work and development of undergraduate curriculum. Additional duties include consulting with the faculty on area concerns, general assistance in running the Painting area, and attending occasional school-wide meetings, as requested.
The TTU SOA Painting program values critical thinking, technical dexterity, and conceptual richness. We provide academic mentorship and resources to fortify students’ creative practice. Courses in art history and critical theory further propel this development, fostering fluidity between making and thinking.
The successful candidate will possess skills in observational painting and drawing (e.g., paint handling, color theory, and composition). They will be equipped to work with students on conceptual development, critical thinking, ideation, and advanced problems in painting. With regard for artistic research, the successful candidate’s work will demonstrate conceptual and formal strength. We are interested in, contemporary painting practices that consider or integrate technology; non-objectivity; social practice, activism, and intervention; relational aesthetics; performance; emphases on process; non-traditional media; interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary collaborations. A successful applicant will also have a commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member as well as a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
While an MFA is expected, candidates who hold equivalent professional experience and have a substantial record of achievement in art and/or design fields may be considered. A minimum of 3-5 years teaching experience at the university or college level is preferred.
