Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

Supervises and coordinates activities of law enforcement personnel on an assigned shift or area to ensure the protection, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors and the protection of University property.

Essential Duties Summary:

Supervises, assigns work, and evaluates the performance of law enforcement personnel assigned to shift or area. Provides in-field instruction, training, and counseling to subordinates. Conducts shift “roll call”, provides daily briefing sessions regarding criminal activity, special assignments, and events. Inspects uniforms, equipment, buildings, and vehicles. Prepares, reviews, and distributes various reports on incidents, operations, and other activities. Coordinates responses to calls, conducts preliminary investigations of incidents, and protects crime scenes. Interviews or supervises the interviews of suspects, witnesses, and victims. Provides general service, courtesy escorts, information, and assistance to faculty, staff, students, and visitors on campus. Acts as a departmental representative or liaison to internal and external groups, as designated. Performs police officer patrol duties as needed. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Commensurate with experience.

Education:

High school diploma or general equivalency education.

Required Licensing/Certification:

Licensed as a Texas peace officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Intermediate peace officer certification (TCLEOSE) required. Advanced peace officer certification preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires working knowledge of law enforcement methods, techniques, practices, equipment and procedures. Proficient in computer skills and knowledge of basic computer software applications.

Work Experience:

Requires two (2) years experience as a commissioned officer with Texas Southern University Police Department, or a total of four (4) years combined law enforcement experience.

Working/Environmental Conditions:

Working conditions includes moderate physical activity that includes prolonged standing and/or walking, handling moderate weight objects and/or using or carrying equipment. Some exposure to risk of accident and require following basic safety precautions. Work may require routine travel.
