The George Washington University

Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

The George Washington University (GW) invites nominations and applications for Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (“Provost”). As GW’s chief academic officer, the Provost will report directly to the President of the university and will oversee academic affairs, the student experience, and all research activities.

GW has expanded its scholarly activities over the last decade, and it is now poised to take its place among the best research institutions in the world. The new Provost will harness the institution’s immense potential to realize its aspiration to preeminence as a comprehensive global research university.

GW is the largest university in the District of Columbia, with ten schools and colleges, nearly one hundred research centers, and approximately 25,000 students from across the nation and around the world. Taking full advantage of its location, the university engages in research and scholarship that advance discovery and influence policy while fostering partnerships with nearly every U.S. federal agency and the world’s most influential scientific and technical organizations. GW’s cutting-edge basic and applied research programs span the sciences, public policy, engineering, arts and humanities, education, and the professional disciplines.

As the university approaches its bicentennial in 2021, the Provost will shape and steward a transformative agenda; move the university into the ranks of the top tier of research institutions; collaborate with university stakeholders and the Board of Trustees to develop and implement a new strategic plan to guide the university as it enters its third century; foster relationships between GW and research institutions within Washington and surrounding communities; honor GW’s commitment to be a good citizen in and of its city; integrate the work of academic units and enhance the collaborations among them; enrich the student experience; recruit preeminent scholars to join GW’s world-class faculty; coordinate budgets with GW’s CFO; and continue GW’s commitment to enhancing diversity, inclusivity, and equity among faculty, students, and staff.

The successful applicant will have a distinguished record of scholarship and administrative experience; possess vision, integrity, creativity, energy, acumen, and diplomatic skills; and will understand and appreciate the value of the liberal arts, professional education, and scholarly research.
