Vice Dean for Research and Innovation

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University seeks a highly accomplished scholar and strategic leader as Vice Dean for Research and Innovation (VDRI). The VDRI provides leadership and support for the Fulton Schools to advance its research mission aligned with the strategic goals of ASU. The VDRI works collaboratively with the Fulton Schools’ leadership, faculty and students to elevate the Fulton Schools’ research enterprise and entrepreneurial efforts and to promote the integration of the Fulton Schools’ research areas within university focus areas.

One of the nation’s top public universities and ranked #1 in Innovation by U.S. News & World Report, ASU is undertaking a bold reinvention of higher education as the New American University. ASU has strong and simultaneous commitments to educational access, research and teaching excellence and assumes significant responsibility for the cultural, social and economic vitality of its surrounding communities in the metropolitan Phoenix region and beyond.

One of the fastest growing research enterprises in the U.S., ASU’s research expenditures have nearly tripled over the last decade, totaling $618 million last year. ASU is well on its way to expanding the university’s research enterprise to over $800 million in expenditures by 2025, and the Fulton Schools will play a pivotal role in this exciting expansion. FSE currently constitutes around one-third of the university’s total federal funding and seeks to grow to over half of ASU’s federally funded research portfolio in the next six years. The Fulton Schools research enterprise is characterized by discoveries of foundational value and advancement of ideas and technologies of translational impact, as evidenced by the fact that FSE is among the top five engineering colleges in the country for licenses and options, startups and invention disclosures, per $10 million of research expenditures.

The VDRI oversees the Fulton Schools’ Office of Research and Innovation, which provides pre- and post-award services for faculty including proposal support, research advancement, program management (for large, strategic proposals), data needs/analysis, and funding and expenditures management, among other activities. The VDRI reports to the Dean of the Fulton Schools and serves as a member of the Dean’s leadership team.
