Job Details

The successful candidate will join and support an interdisciplinary team analyzing issues across human development (demographics, education, health), social change and development (economics, governance, government and social finance, international relations) and biophysical sustainability (linking to agriculture, energy, climate change, and water systems). The International Futures (IFs) system includes hard-linked models across these issue areas. Although no modeler is likely to have pre-existing experience in all of them, the candidate must be willing to learn about them and to be involved in model refinement and extension across them and others as needs arise.

The purpose of the Centers applied research is to inform national and international (sometimes more local) policy efforts, such as those related to the Sustainable Development Goals, including assessment of synergies and trade-offs across packages of interventions. The Center works with a very large range of clients and partners on projects that vary widely depending on their interests and needs.

Essential Functions

The position holder must be prepared to process and manage large datasets, become proficient in using and developing the International Futures system (a complex integrated assessment model), and apply the tool to respond to different research questions. The incumbent must be able to efficiently and productively develop new model refinements and extensions as needed by the Center. In addition, s/he must be able to think and write critically and independently about her/his work as well as be able to communicate complex model components and relationships to sometimes less-sophisticated model stakeholders and users. A key responsibility will be vetting of model results and identification of model problems and inconsistent behavior in model outputs.

The selected candidate will interact with leading researchers of different nationalities and will conduct needed research and modeling independently, as well as to contributing to larger collaborative research activities.
