Job Summary:

The Executive Director provides leadership and strategic direction for the Center for Student Success [“Center”]. The Center includes academic support services, tutoring services, accessibility resources [“SOAR”], the writing and media lab, and English as a second language (ESL).

The Executive Director dually reports to the Associate Academic Dean (Academic Affairs) and the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students (Student Life).

Job Description:

Executive Director Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership, guidance, direct supervision, training and evaluation to the Center’s professional and support staff.
  • Maintains a roster of regular student appointments.
  • Works with the Dean of Students and the Associate Academic Dean to ensure that the Center is supporting students through a cross-divisional approach, facilitating and implementing initiatives from both the Divisions of Student Life and Academic Affairs.
  • Develops relationships and works collaboratively with many units on campus, such as mentoring and advising, counseling center, student health center, spiritual life, Title IX and ADA, student life case management, athletics, housing and residence life, and academic departments.
  • Assesses Furman’s academic support efforts and implements organizational and programmatic adjustments to ensure that those efforts comply with the tenets of The Furman Advantage [“TFA”].
  • Develops policies and strategic plans related to academic support initiatives and resource allocations.  Oversees the Center’s operating budget.
  • Partners with the Development Office to fundraise for the Center’s space, programmatic and service needs.
  • Oversees the tutoring services program and provides supervision to the professional staff member responsible for the program.  Evaluates and proposes best practice strategies for providing effective services to all students, including the recruitment and training of student tutors from all academic disciplines.
  • Ensures the Center provides regular seminars/workshops for students on study skills, time management, test-taking strategies, etc.
  • Serves as a resource for those seeking advice (students, advisors, faculty, parents) on strategies to improve or assist in improving academic performance.
  • Refers students as necessary to appropriate campus resources.
  • Assists students in developing individualized learning plans.
  • Monitors and tracks utilization of programs and services and prepares monthly reports.
  • Serves on the Student Intervention Team (SIT).

General Responsibilities:

  • Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information; including maintaining up-to-date information about the Center and the University.
  • Serves on other campus committees as assigned.
  • Completes performance review process with supervisor/employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students and/or the Associate Academic Dean in support of the goals and objectives of the Divisions of Student Life and Academic Affairs.   • Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisors, students, faculty and families to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.
  • Frequent contact with campus departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.

Reports To:  AVP/Dean of Students and Associate Academic Dean (dual report)

Education/Skill Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, public administration or a related field required; doctoral degree preferred. 
  • 5-7 years experience in college academic support programs and/or accessibility resource programs required.
  • Knowledge of current state and federal laws and regulations, policies, practices and procedures, identified best practices and trends in the field of education related to ADA/Section 504 or other state and federal laws or regulations preferred.
  • Experience working with different learning styles and executive function coaching preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational and leadership skills and the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Must have problem-solving and multi-tasking skills.
  • Must be able to work with diverse, interdisciplinary colleagues and community stakeholders at all levels.
