Two Instructor positions are available that encompass research activities in the Bone and Joint Research group within the Department of Orthopedics.  Responsibilities will involve management of projects aimed at understanding musculoskeletal biology in homeostasis and disease.  Colonies of rare genetically diverse wild strains of mice, application of state-of-the-art imaging, genetics and molecular methods to study bone, cartilage and other tissues of the skeletal system.  Work will also involve lab management at both the lab and center level.  Various teaching responsibilities will also be assigned, including training of new laboratory personnel, lecturing to trainees in the lab on topics related to musculoskeletal biology and pathology, and providing lectures in the Orthopedic Residency training program, specifically in the Orthopedic Basic Science training block.

Examples of Work Performed

  •  Mouse husbandry, management of breeding/genotyping, orthopedic surgery, skeletal tissue harvest.
  • Collection of skeletal imaging information from live mice and harvested tissue samples

  • Isolation and purification of protein and nucleic acid from harvested tissues from mice and humans

  • Molecular analyses of mouse and human tissues, including Western blotting, qPCR/PCR, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence

  • Microbiology work in the context of gut microbiome

  • Introductory wet lab and lab safety training of new personnel that will be working in the Orthopedic Research labs

  • Lecturing to Orthopedic Residents in their Basic Science training block to help them prepare for the OIT exam

QualificationsMinimum Requirements
  • A PhD degree in a biomedical science-related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of skeletal system biology and genetics
  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Basic computer skills in both Mac and PC environments
  • Bioinformatics expertise would be a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working with animal models of disease
  • Experience performing surgical and sample collection methods in live mice, including skeletal fracture, knee joint injury, gavage, blood sampling, fecal sampling, tail vein injection and injection

  • Experience performing tissue, protein and nucleic acid isolation and analyses
