Senior Business Analyst/Tableau Developer

Job description


Working as a member of the Center for Data, Analytics and Reporting (CeDAR) team, the Senior Business Analyst/Tableau Developer delivers high-quality Business Intelligence (BI) services and data visualization solutions to the Princeton University campus community. In this position, you will be responsible for gathering user requirements, designing interactive dashboards, and developing and supporting analytic solutions. This individual is also responsible for creating training and outreach programs that raise the level of skill in data analytics and reporting across campus.

  • Analyze and document business requirements and implement Business Intelligence (BI) solutions using Tableau, Cognos, and other BI tools
  • Determine user needs at the conceptual and technical levels to design and implement the most appropriate solution
  • Collaborate with campus users to create and support Tableau data visualization objects and custom dashboards
  • Gather end-to-end dashboard requirements including logical data model, data sources, security needs, metadata, and preferred visualizations
  • Document end-user data needs and data transformation logic, create logical data models, and partner with the team’s data modeler to develop a physical data model
  • Assist Tableau users prepare and clean their data for easy analysis, with the Tableau Prep tool
  • Guide data stewards in the collection of metadata and document in the metadata management tool, Information Governance Catalog
  • Assist users to configure Tableau Server sites, including security models, data integrity, report distribution, scheduling, and auditing functions
  • Working with technical team members, help diagnose and resolve customer reporting issues
  • Keep abreast of upcoming Tableau releases, explore new features, and update documentation library
  • Assist with new tool, upgrade, and application maintenance testing for Tableau Desktop, Server, and Data Prep
  • Create end-user test plans, and communicate and assist users with their testing
  • Manage inventory and requests for Tableau licenses
  • Determine customer training needs, develop training programs, and deliver training solutions and tailored outreach initiatives
  • Create and maintain Tableau training and documentation, emphasizing best practices
  • Desire to remain actively curious about Tableau and BI tools, staying abreast of and sharing knowledge about current trends
  • Work on special projects as assigned


  • 5 to 7 years of professional experience as a business analyst and Tableau developer
  • In-depth experience with Visual Analytics and the ability to create clear Tableau visualizations, charts, and graphs
  • Significant experience designing and implementing intuitive, feature-rich Tableau BI interfaces and dashboards
  • Significant experience designing and implementing user-friendly and dynamic Tableau dashboards with features such as KPIs and drill functionality, and chart styles that best visualize the data (Heat Maps, Scatterplots, Slicers, etc.)
  • Strong experience using Tableau functions, such as calculated fields, parameter controls, hierarchy, groups, sets, dashboard actions, filters, and annotations
  • Ability to publish, schedule, and refresh reports to Tableau Server
  • Experience managing the BI project lifecycle, from requirements gathering to determining best-fit solutions, and designing and developing prototypes
  • An understanding of business domain data requirements, user task flows, and objectives to create design solutions for visual data delivery and analysis
  • Ability to develop prototypes from business requirements to bring simplicity and context to complex designs
  • Ability to identify trends and patterns in data to provide actionable insights, and understand data visualization concepts
  • Oracle/SQL skills to create complex joins and awareness of Oracle functions and cursors
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Detail-oriented investigative and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with customers and teams
  • Understanding of DataMart/Data Warehouse concepts, ETL concepts
  • 3+ years experience developing training materials and delivering hands-on classes
  • Ability to effectively assess and learn new systems and products


Preferred Qualifications


  • Tableau certification
  • Experience with data analysis and programming tools (such as R and Python) and integration with Tableau
  • PL/SQL Programming skills
  • Familiarity with web/Internet technology
  • Familiarity with a variety of BI tools, such as Cognos, Microstrategy, and PowerBI




Bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience
