School/Center Overview

The School of Arts and Sciences forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world’s leading research universities. We teach students across all 12 Penn schools, and our academic departments span the reach from anthropology and biology to sociology and South Asian studies.


The Philosophy Politics and Economics Program seeks a Director for our research group. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed and enthusiastic about policy-relevant research on risk management, resilience, risk financing, decision-making, and climate risk and adaptation topics. The Director will report to the Director and play a key role in overseeing, managing, and developing research projects and activities. The ideal candidate will be a researcher with experience managing research projects, supervising junior research staff, and fundraising for risk and resilience related research. The group is expanding and we seek a Director that can think creatively and strategically about building up the group’s portfolio of work and support its proposal to transition into a research center.

The Director will help with setting research directions for the group and help secure grant funding for the group’s work. This person will also work to engage faculty affiliates in the group’s projects. This person will oversee postdocs and research associates and work with the Director on postdoctoral and other research staff hiring. They will also assist in the recruiting and managing of visitors. This person will be expected to maintain relationships with sponsors and research partners.


Find, develop and execute grant proposals for the group. Oversee and manage contracts for the research group including the Behavioral Ethics Lab and Penn Social Norms Group. Keep in touch with industry, NGOs, governments and other interested parties. Organize training courses for the Penn Social Norms Group.

Manage successful grant awards, including all personnel hiring, developing and overseeing budgets for each project and the group as a whole, and similar duties.

Network with industry, NGOs, governments and other potential partners. Represent the group through participation in conferences and other outreach efforts.

Contribute to ongoing research projects, including participating in project meetings, writing reports to sponsors and ensuring project deliverables are satisfactory and on time.

Organize and run an annual conference highlighting the work done by the research group. Manage publicity and a website publicizing work done by the group. Develop promotional materials.

Consult with the Master of Behavioral and Decision Sciences and the Philosophy, Politics and Economics Program to ensure undergraduate and graduate student participation in the research group.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


A Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

MA required, Ph.D. preferred

Preference research or familiarity with research in behavioral science.

Must have significant previous experience and active interest in behavioral science. 3-5 years

Preference for previous experience managing, developing and applying for grants. 3-5 years

Preference for previous experience leading a team. 3-5 years

Willingness to travel
