The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader is responsible for planning, designing and directing a state-of-the-art CAD/CAM Laboratory for the School of Dental Medicine. The laboratory has a focus on CAD/CAM-laboratory based systems and implant restorations. The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader oversees the entire operation. He/she therefore has an international understanding and deep knowledge of the latest developments in digital technologies. He/she will also review und recommend university/school/laboratory objectives, evaluate new approaches to problem solving and assess changing facts and conditions.

The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader has an education and detailed skills in traditional and digital approaches to handle and understand all aspects of restorative dentistry. He/she will evaluate, design and develop new digital workflows for all areas of dental technology and will implement it in the daily operation for the School of Dental Medicine.

The position is responsible for bringing the latest CAD/CAM-equipment to the School of Dental Medicine. The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader is in close contact with the Department of Development and Alumni Relations for guidance, recommendations and support in order to get donations for the latest digital equipment and technology. Beneficiaries of this approach are all departments of the school. They will have the opportunity to implement and use new digital workflows for their specific needs. The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader is responsible for operating and maintaining all digital equipment in the laboratory up to manufacturers recommendations.

The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader is responsible for training faculty and residents on the latest 3D designing software and tools. He/she develops courses and is supporting and training residents and faculty in digital case set-ups for complex implant restorations. Furthermore, he/she is producing comprehensive and advanced cases for residents of the specialty programs of the dental school. In addition, he/she documents cases for publications and case presentations and possible research projects. He/she also works on complex cases for outside clients to bring additional money to the school and strengthen the laboratory’s/school’s reputation.

The CAD/CAM Laboratory Technology Leader will develop research set ups for new digital approaches, is familiar with operating professional 3D designing software, writes research protocols and is conducting independent material research for the latest materials in digital dentistry. He/she collaborates with other research institutions of the University of Pennsylvania. He/she will write scientific publications and case presentations about the latest findings and developments in digital dentistry.


BA/BS; 5 years of dental technology, dental machinist, or related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in manufacturing ceramic dental restorations, including crowns, veneers, and frames; developing and maintaining mechanical dental equipment and systems; working with programmable controls, machine tools, and machining technology, using CAD/CAM and related design software; developing and testing specialized machine tool systems; and providing dental technology training to dentists and dental technicians.
Experience in a combination of engineering and leadership roles with proficiency in CAD / CAM / 3D and prior experience with tool design.
Skills and experience developing innovative / novel approaches to manufacturing challenges
Ability to take a directional concept and develop detailed requirements and a structured program around conceptual development, prove out, and application
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellence in use of Microsoft Office applications
