The UNC Department of History is one of the largest academic departments within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department is committed to the purposes of a research university, to the teaching of history at the undergraduate level as a core discipline in a liberal arts education, and to the training of graduate students.

Position Description

The Undergraduate Student Services position is the key position for the support of undergraduate students and programs in the History department. The person in this position provides daily service for faculty (e.g., scheduling classrooms, updating student registrations), for undergraduate students (more than 700 History majors and minors and more than 4,000 students in history courses each semester), and for the Associate Chair (e.g., in scheduling all classes for each semester and monitoring enrollments). This position also oversees undergraduate registrations for required undergraduate seminars, manages the undergraduate honors program, collects syllabi for all courses, organizes special events such as graduation ceremonies, oversees the submission of grades, arranges summer school course schedules, and works closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Undergraduate Studies Committee, and the office of the University Registrar. In addition, this position serves as the support for the Faculty adviser to Phi Alpha Theta (History honor society) and organizes the initiation ceremony.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The following essential knowledge, skills and abilities are required for success in this position: strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and Access) and a demonstrated record of strong organizational and customer service skills. Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) as well as the demonstrated ability to manage multiple and changing priorities and to meet deadlines are also important.

Preferred Qualifications

One year (or more) of working experience in an academic environment (working with faculty, staff and students) is strongly preferred. Candidates who have knowledge of the Connect Carolina system are highly desired. The department also strongly prefers candidates with knowledge of UNC’s Undergraduate guidelines for currently enrolled students. Experience with social media platforms is also helpful.
