Classification Title HVAC/R Mechanic - Intermediate Position Type Staff Department Building Maintenance Position Title HVAC/R Mechanic Position Number S00002PD Pay Grade Range Nature of Work

Reporting to the HVAC/R Superintendent, this is an Intermediate level position for skilled trades professionals. This position works from Monday to Friday, 3:00PM – 12:00AM and is responsible for performing routine and emergency maintenance tasks. The evening shift HVAC/R Mechanic may work in several different trade capacities (Carpentry, HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and Custodial) in response to critical, urgent, or emergency work requests.

A HVAC/R Mechanic Intermediate performs trades work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of building structures and facilities following recognized procedures and techniques of the HVAC/R trade using hand and power tools related to the HVAC/R trade.

This position will perform building maintenance work including but not limited to the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of Residential and Commercial HVAC systems (DX, VRV, VRF, Air Handlers, Chillers, Cooling Towers, Hydronic Heaters, Steam Boilers, and related equipment), refrigeration systems, and plumbing systems including pumps, motors, and valves and the like for a range of building types including institutional, commercial, and residential buildings.

The person in this position must independently complete work orders as assigned, perform routine preventive maintenance, construct and install building system components including equipment and fixtures; maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs; works alone and with other assigned trades workers for the purpose of completing projects, and is responsible for the repair and upkeep of tools.

This person must clearly communicate information regarding procedures and/or status of work orders and must take appropriate action to comply with building and safety regulations.

Must be available as needed to work nights or weekends to service emergency needs of our customers and responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of High school diploma or GED is required, plus 5 (five) years or more of experience in the residential and commercial HVAC/R trades field, Or combination of 2 (two) years Vocational Trades training and 3 (three) years of field experience in the HVAC/R trade.

A valid driver’s license required. The EPA universal refrigerant recovery certification from an accredited institution is required.

Must have a practical knowledge of the standard tools, methods, practices of the HVAC/R trade, and HVAC/R codes. Must have a practical knowledge of industrial, commercial, and residential HVAC/R means and methods of installation, repair, and service. Must be skilled in performing technical tasks with an eye for detail, skilled in adapting to meet changing job conditions; planning and managing work orders; preparing and maintaining accurate records; proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and written work instructions; proficient in understanding and complying with safety regulations and handling hazardous materials in the performance of job duties (i.e. ADA, NFPA, OSHA and EPA).

Must be able to follow instructions, perform routine tasks individually or in a team setting; well organized; able to multitask; able to adjust work hours as conditions may dictate; able to perform work in the least disruptive manner possible to customers; able to demonstrate courteous actions; and able to follow the organization’s established protocol for customer service.

Must be able to communicate effectively through verbal/written means in a clear and effective manner; listen to others and understand their needs; ensure that information gets to the right person at the right time; establish and maintain a productive and collaborative professional work relationships with clients and coworkers through personal communication; respond to questions within policy and procedure guidelines in assigned area through multiple communication media. Must have basic skills for regular use of computer technology, including handheld devices, web browsing, email, digital calendars, viewing documents online, filling out online forms, and accessing online training systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Training: Degree, Diploma, or Professional Certificate equivalent to a two-year course in the HVAC/R Trade and one or more of the following credentials NATE certification, RSES Certificate Member, Backflow License, VRF/VRV Certification.

Seven (7) years or more years experience in a HVAC/R service related construction or maintenance trade in a university, health care, or school maintenance department.

Skills: Must have basic skills for daily use of computer technology, including handheld devices, web browsing, email, digital calendars, viewing documents online, filling out online forms, accessing online training systems, and interacting with UWG business systems (One USG, CMMS, and others).

Knowledge: Should be knowledgeable in HVAC/R codes, able to read and interpret technical information, including charts, gauges, dials, blueprints, schematics, specifications, and operating manuals. Should be able to provide technical assistance to others by troubleshooting simple facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause.

Salary $17.14/hourly (minimum) to $22.38/hourly (midpoint) Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or more. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds. Must be able to stand, walk, bend/stoop, reach above shoulder level and climb stairs. Ability to perform strenuous manual tasks. Ability to access confined spaces and work in open areas such as roof tops, etc.
