The Stanford University Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation is currently accepting applications for the position of Athletic Groundskeeper. Groundskeepers perform a variety of duties requiring skill and experience in athletic field maintenance. Groundskeepers follow work schedules prepared by the Athletics Turf Manager. Work is generally done outdoors under variable environmental conditions (darkness, weather, etc.). Work schedules may include seasonal early mornings and weekend duty.

Summary of Essential job functions:

  • Operates standard transmission utility vehicles and tractors, reel and rotary mowers, aerator, sod cutter, line trimmer.
  • Layout and paint lines of varsity sports and supporting events.
  • Grooms infield, blowing and line trimming perimeters, cleans artificial surfaces, hand waters turf and landscape, repairs field damage.
  • Applies fertilizers and chemicals, assists in annual field renovations (aerate, topdress).
  • Checks condition of athletic fields and reports findings to a supervisor.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance duties. Trims trees per sport regulations. Keeps clean turf equipment such as tractors, utility vehicles, and mowers.
  • Assist in sports requiring game day Groundcrew presence.
    Summary of required skills and abilities:
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of environmental conditions.
  • Ability to walk distances of up to five miles per day.
  • Ability to follow job related instructions.
  • Ability to work either independently or in teams.
  • Ability to operate power equipment such as mowers and tractors with a variety of attachments.
  • Ability to recognize unnatural or unhealthy appearance of plant materials.
  • Ability to use hand tools to perform a variety of repairs.
  • Ability to work safely in accordance with all safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to apply fertilizers and chemicals safely and accurately.
  • Knowledge of applicable sports regulations, safety procedures, and general practice involved in preparing facilities for sports events.
  • A qualified pesticide applicator's certificate (QAC) or forklift certification is desired.
  • Possession of a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License is required.One year of Athletics or Physical Education grounds experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience required.
