PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Director of Video Development will create campus focused programming for air on the Big Ten Network and general use by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. All programming should be infused with the underlying message that Illinois is one of the nation's pre-eminent public research universities, that it has shaped the world, and that its alumni are the leaders of their generation. The Director will focus on the creation of long format documentaries but will also create content of a variety of genres including events, performances, magazine-style productions, and student work. All video work will incorporate high-end production values consistent with nationally broadcast programming.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Production

  • Develops concepts and outlines for all programming.
  • Directs research efforts and acquires archival footage and photographs for use in productions.
  • Obtains rights and clearances for copyrighted material used in broadcast productions.
  • Conducts on-camera interviews.
  • Writes or guides writing of initial draft scripts and final scripts for programs.
  • Edits, proofreads and secures approval for text.
  • Directs the operation of cameras, audio and lighting equipment during field production.
  • Edits video and/or works with production personnel throughout the editing process.
  • Creates on-air graphics and animation sequences for programs.
  • Creates marketing material such as press releases, social media images, and text.
  • Responds to media requests regarding programs.
  • Manage closed captioning of programs.
  • Format programs for online distribution.
  • Manages multiple deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Supervises and trains production assistants and student interns. Assigns and reviews their work and ensures deadlines are met.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for creation and coordination of the unit’s annual budget request.
  • Complete University training and certification for TEM card and P-card.
  • Serves as Unit’s Purchasing manager which includes submitting tax exemption documents, P-card reports, and tracking expenses.
  • Arranges travel for the unit.
  • Prepares and submits TEM reports for the unit.
  • Reviews and approves TEM and P-Card transactions for compliance with university policy and appropriate use of funds.
  • Manage the hiring process of production assistants and student interns.
  • Reviews and approves bi-weekly payroll process. Initiates transfers and corrections as needed.
  • Prepares all documents needed for purchase order creation which includes new vendor form, quotes and contracts.

Project Management

  • Identifies programming concepts.
  • Secures approval through both campus and BTN channels.
  • Works with colleagues in the DIA to set deadlines and schedule production and post-production.
  • Serves as primary contact with BTN officials.
  • Manages associated project paperwork and budget guidelines.
  • Ensures that all programming supports and builds the Illinois brand.
  • Maintain knowledge of, and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position.

Collaboration and Brainstorming

  • Works with communications professionals, faculty, and development associates across campus to continually develop new programming ideas.
  • Works with colleagues to develop strategies for reaching target audience.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, sports communications, sports marketing, sports management, public relations, communications, English, or a related field.

Experience:

Required

  • Minimum of one year of professional experience working in the sports communications/sports information field. Additional four years of experience in broadcasting, focusing on the production of features and long-form, documentary programs.
  • Experience in video production including location videography and audio recording, studio production, lighting, or video editing.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Premier, Photoshop, or Media Encoder.

Preferred

  • Experience creating content for national broadcast.
  • Five years of experience working with professional DSLR cameras and lenses, camera stabilizers, microphones, audio recorders, professional lighting equipment, and other top quality video production equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Outstanding storytelling ability and creativity, especially in a long-form documentary format
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and the use of discretion and judgment are essential. Professionalism and ability to interact with senior administrative and academic officials.
  • Must be familiar with or be willing to learn accessibility requirements for video.
  • Ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task, often with frequent interruptions.
  • Familiarity with the structure and excellence of the Urbana-Champaign campus.

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:

This is a full-time Civil Service Athletic Communications Associate position appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Research

Undergraduate Education

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The Arts

The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
