Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The Lead Custodian provides direction to a group of one to eight lower level personnel (Custodian Is and Custodian IIs) in various custodial functions, coordinates and schedules work to service special events; leads the custodial team in furniture set up for different events, floor cleaning projects and general custodial maintenance of buildings assigned; assists with the distribution of supplies. This position also inspects the work of Custodian I and II staff; may drive a vehicle and perform Custodian I and II duties are required (floor cleaning projects, removing trash from restrooms and different buildings as assigned, as well as cleaning and polishing furniture and other items including chalk boards and walls).

Education Required HS Diploma or equivalent Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement

Related custodial experience.

License/Certification Required

Must possess (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with no more than three moving violations and/or at fault accidents within the past 36 months, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

License/Certification Preferred Skills Required

Physical Demands

HEAVY – Exert up to 70 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently and/or up to 20 lbs of force constantly to move objects. Requires walking or standing up to 8 hours per day and multi-limb coordination to operate heavy equipment and drive a vehicle. Other physical requirements of he job include the ability to bend/crouch/or kneel, lift, see, reach, climb and balance

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Primarily an indoor work environment in a variety of university settings which may include offices, laboratories, classrooms, athletics facilities, covered walkways, etc. May be exposed to temperature and weather extremes when working under covered walkways or in facilities that are not climate controlled.

Work Hazards: Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders or scaffolding, or in wet areas. Possible exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals.

Work Schedule: Managers will be required to stay past normal working hours if needed, or in case of an emergency. The work schedule may vary and requires flexibility. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

- Leads a group of custodial staff in performing daily custodial job duties as well as furniture setup and special cleaning
- Monitors and inspects all work in progress
- Provides on the job and classroom training in custodial procedures
- Coordinates and schedules work to service special events
- Meets with customers for feedback on work performed
- Assists in distribution of custodial supplies
- Locks and unlocks buildings as needed
- Assists in time studies, scheduling and testing of custodial equipment
- Performs custodial duties as needed, such as, but not limited to, cleaning, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, removing trash, pressure washing, polishing and cleaning furniture and equipment, and striping, scrubbing and buffing / shampooing flooring
- Completes other duties as assigned
