DESCRIPTION

The Staff Research Associate will participate in selected research projects. The incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator in performing experiments using techniques isolation DNA/RNA/protein, DNA cloning, and gel electrophoresis. Train lab members on established lab protocols as needed. Organize and maintain the lab working areas and equipment and serve as lab radiation and bio safety coordinator. The incumbent will also contribute to lab management by ordering lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records and re-stocking.

  • Must be willing to work with mice and comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.
  • Overtime and flexible work schedule required. Must be able to work weekends as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of, and college level course work in biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques acquired through a combination of extensive study and experience.

  • Proven skill, knowledge and experience working with mice and with small animal surgery. Comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.

  • Demonstrated skill on manipulation of BSL-2 viruses.

  • Practical knowledge and experience in standard molecular biology procedures including, but not limited to: sterile technique, PCR, and mouse genotyping.

  • Skill and demonstrated ability to operate standard laboratory equipment, including flow cytometer, centrifuges, balances, and pH meters.

  • Demonstrated experience in sterile technique as applied to the propagation of prokaryotic and mammalian cells.

  • Demonstrated experience with flow cytometry (including cell staining and data analysis).

  • Prior experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to hire and direct the work of undergraduate student lab employees. Skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures.

  • Proven knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Ability to proactively and appropriate facilitate the maintenance of all lab and equipment, maintain steady levels of lab supplies and purchasing records.

  • Proven experience using Apple, PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills needed to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements.

  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload and follow written and verbal protocols.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work with mice and must be comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.

  • Must be willing and able to work safely with viral and bacterial preparations.

  • Must be able to safely lift mouse cages.

  • Must be able to work on feet all day.
