The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training
future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting
investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their
owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic
laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a
university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging
infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

The Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory provides the capabilities necessary for the detection and characterization of most animal diseases. Besides providing a testing service, we are a full-service diagnostic laboratory system that offers interpretation of results and consultation services on veterinary diagnostic issues.

Standard hours are 8AM-5PM, Monday – Friday. Diagnostic testing and receiving may require hours outside of this time frame upon completion of training. Working on some weekends and holidays should be expected.

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This technician is responsible for planning, coordinating and executing the performance of all Molecular Diagnostic test procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases of animals.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

experience in a microbiology, medical technology, veterinary diagnostic, commercial or public health laboratory.

Physical Demands

lift 40 pounds unassisted. Stand, walk or sit for long periods of time.

Perform Molecular Diagnostic test procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases of animals – Specimen preparation, nucleic acid extraction, quality assessment, perform PCR, prepare and complete all paper documentation

Percentage of time 85 Duties/Responsibilities


Interpret and report Results – Review PCR results and controls to verify/validate interpretations; Enter all results in laboratory database and send results to clients

Percentage of time 5 Duties/Responsibilities


Quality Control – Prepare and validate new lots and batches of the PCR controls; Document and maintain accurate records

General Lab maintenance – Autoclave biohazard waste, wash glassware, restock supplies, equipment maintenance and other duties as assigned
