The Associate Chair is primarily responsible for managing faculty and learner experience in the courseroom. The Associate Chair ensures a high quality course room experience by effectively managing faculty participation, interactions, and performance in the courseroom. Additionally, this individual is also responsible for creating and implementing a workforce plan that successfully identifies hiring needs, manages the recruitment process, and executes the hiring decision and on-boarding of new faculty. An important characteristic of this role is the ability to remain connected to the courseroom, learners and discipline, and in quarters when workload and responsibilities permit, the Associate Chair is expected to teach a course. As a member of the school leadership team, the Associate Chair supports school, university and enterprise wide initiatives as needed.

Faculty and Courseroom Management:

  • Manage and resolve learner and faculty issues in collaboration with organizational stakeholders (special attention should be given to escalated learner issues)
  • Influence, implement, and ensure compliance with Capella’s academic and related policies.
  • Provide support to the enrollments/reenrollment process.
  • Support PhD/Prof. Doc. completion efforts (graduate only-accountabilities and activities varies by Graduate Schools)
  • Supports and collaborates with Profession Lead in the development and revision of academic offerings.
  • Leads and manages course offering/scheduling.
  • Supports and collaborates with profession lead to ensure appropriate academic offering accreditation and/or licensure is obtained and maintained.
  • Utilize analytics and evidence-based management to develop insights and execute actions that drive continuous quality improvement practices in learner success, teaching, mentoring and faculty-learner engagement, academic quality, and curricula development.
  • Deploys faculty resources to support the achievement of established operational plan and quality metrics, according to University and School utilization guidelines.
  • Ensures each faculty member is meeting or exceeding Faculty Expectation and Performance Standards (courseroom and mentoring) by effectively using performance data to provide timely and meaningful feedback/coaching and professional development opportunities
  • Supports efforts to increase and maintain faculty engagement
  • Hiring and onboarding of new faculty
  • Faculty mid year and year end appraisals

Teaching and other faculty functions: 

These include teaching and instruction, work related to doctoral assignments, curriculum and course development, research and scholarship, professional service and practice, and leadership though team engagement.

Specific to Teaching and Instruction:

  • Adhering to course room set up procedures and establishes rapport with learners
  • Facilitating course discussions ensuring active participation among learners creating entries at least 3-6 days per week
  • Responding to learner inquiries within 24-48 hours
  • Assessing learner assignments and engagement in a timely manner consistent with university and program requirements
  • Reporting at-risk learners to appropriate school staff and follows case management protocols
  • End of course evaluations Appropriately meets qualitative standards:
  • Quality of teaching aligned to CFE expectations
  • Contributions to the specialization/school or university
  • Demonstrates active interest in one’s performance and is responsive to feedback
  • Disciplinary expertise as relevant to Capella needs
  • Ability to manage a breadth and depth of work activities and responsibilities:
  • Demonstrates a breadth of capability across a variety of learning activities
  • Demonstrates flexibility in managing workload
  • Achieves quality learning outcomes
  • Makes case management recommendations as necessary

Education: 

  • The successful candidate will have a PhD or doctorate in Human Services, Counseling, or related field, from a regionally accredited institution. 
  • Demonstrated contribution to the discipline including publishing, committee involvement, or professional association involvement.

Experiences:

  • A minimum of 3 years teaching in an accredited program or related field; online higher education teaching experience desired.
  • Significant experience as a scholar/practitioner in the field. 
  • Demonstrated leadership in academia or in a practitioner setting.
  • Significant experience as an instructional leader in the field with a minimum  of 3+ years of teaching, preferably in an undergraduate psychology program.  
  • Demonstrated contributions to the discipline such as publishing, committee involvement, or professional association involvement

  • Effective organizational skills
