JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for coordinating, overseeing, and initiating lab procedures, policies, and activities, as well as maintaining the general functionality for the science laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will:

  • Coordinate and communicate with instructors and the Division Chair in planning and organizing the development, preparation, and set-up of laboratory experiments that support all classes. Develop and maintain laboratory protocols and instructor’s guides for laboratory exercises.
  • Prepare chemical and biological media, solutions and assays used in classroom labs, to the extent not yet achieved by any lab aides or assistants. Mix chemical solutions, culture microbes (some of mild pathogenicity), and assemble all supplies, including preserved dissectible specimens. Responsible for ensuring supply of the media used by students in the Microbiology labs.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposing of hazardous waste, as well as abiding by institutional, state, and federal laws with regard to waste disposal.  Establish and enforce a safe work and learning environment as it applies to handling, storage, documentation, and disposal of chemicals and biohazards used in the lab in order to comply with applicable college policies and procedures, state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Provide work direction to work-study student lab aides to include hands-on training ensuring working safely in a lab environment, train workers on varying processes of different lab set-ups. Oversee laboratory assistants (if applicable), student employees, including organizing, and communicating lab worker assignment schedules. Conduct orientation and training in standard laboratory protocols and waste management. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials to include preparation and setting up of lab equipment, chemicals, biological materials, and supplies necessary to conduct laboratory assignments.
  • Participate in the development of new labs. Properly analyze lab results and interpret issues to fix classroom experiments when problems arise.  Provide orientation and training to faculty, staff, and students in the use of the laboratory equipment, materials, waste receptacles, and supplies. Test out student lab procedures & protocols to ensure learner success in labs. Serve as learning facilitator via customized learning sessions for individuals or groups addressing lab procedures, use of the equipment and materials, or safety or waste handling.
  • Be proficient in the operation and use of District scientific instrumentation, to include maintenance and repair, as necessary. Advise and manage laboratory equipment contracts as directed by the Division Chair. Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained. Perform routine repair and maintenance, and arrange with the Division Chair for outside service as needed.
  • Provide general and specific advice for procurement procedures. Adhere to all policies; institutional, state, and federal, in the procurement process. Successfully learn financial requirements and obligations relating to procurement issues, and maintain vendor relationships necessary for the benefit of the college. Acquire quotations and complete purchases successfully, and communicate the status of orders to all involved. Develop, maintain, and communicate information on purchasing, inventories, and waste handling. Assess and maintain appropriate levels of office and laboratory supplies and reagents. Maintain accurate records of packing slips and requisitions, and of all orders from start to delivery and shelving. Manage an inventory system for chemicals/reagents, instructional materials and equipment including computer hardware and software. Coordinate the distribution and retrieval of classroom resources such as computers, iPads, or electronic lab instruments. Maintain usage records and monitor materials return.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

*Science Lab Technician Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Associate’s degree in Physical or Biological Sciences & one (1) year of applicable experience - or - currently employed as a Science Lab Technician at CAC.  Entry salary for Science Lab Technician is $17.58 per hour


*Science Lab Specialist Qualifications:  EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:   Bachelor’s degree in Physical or Biological Sciences & two (2) years applicable experience.Entry salary for Science Lab Specialist is $21.68 per hour

*Position level will be determined based upon education and experience

SPECIAL POSITION CONDITIONS:  Must be able to travel throughout district using own transportation.  One position will be based at the San Tan Campus with primary responsibilities of supporting science labs at the San Tan Campus, Superstition Mountain Campus, and Aravaipa Campus and one position will be based at the Signal Peak Campus/Maricopa Campus with primary responsibilities supporting the science labs at the Signal Peak Campus and the Maricopa Campus.  However, position may be assigned to any location within the District (temporarily or permanently) according to the needs of the District.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform this job include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills in addition to the ability to operate and maintain assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment customary to assigned lab setting.
  • Knowledge of a variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.
  • Possess the skills needed to properly analyze lab success and interpret issues in classroom experiments, when problems arise.
  • Working knowledge of scientific instrumentation, to include maintenance and repair, is necessary.
  • Understand financial requirements and obligations relating to procurement issues and have the ability to maintain vendor relationships necessary for the benefit of the college.
  • Ability to acquire quotations and conduct tendering exercises. Ability to advise and manage laboratory contracts.

Transcripts issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a full translation (word for word) by an acceptable translator. Additionally, each foreign transcript must be evaluated for equivalency to United States accredited course work by an acceptable agency such as those agencies certified by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
