Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for dynamic, experienced, student-centered educators to teach Foundations of Quantitative Reasoning during the fall semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.

We are seeking adjunct instructors to teach MTH 150: Foundations of Quantitative Reasoning. MTH 150 is a 3-credit class that meets for 2.5 hours/week.  There are approximately 25 students in a section.  The adjunct pay rate is $2,800/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach.

In addition, students concurrently enroll in a 1-hour study labs designed for review of concepts and to practice the skills presented in lecture. Instructors are paid $25/hour if they agree to teach the study labs associated with their course.

The course description is as follows: Mathematical skills spanning algebra, geometry and basic descriptive statistics are embedded in a series of challenges facing adults in today's world. The course provides students with the background information and mathematical skills essential for personal financial and consumer literacy. Finance topics include compound interest and its relationship to savings and debt (credit cards, student loans, mortgages), balancing a bank account, essential personal taxes, stocks, bonds, and investment planning. An exploration of the federal budget will be included. The course introduces the quantitative basis for statistical surveys (fundamentals of preparing and reading tables, graphs and charts), unit conversion skills and geometrical principles used in simple building projects. The process of rigorous mathematical thinking (inductive, deductive and algorithmic) is emphasized.

The Mathematics program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. Successful candidates for this position must be comfortable using open educational resources as part of their instructional approach as this course has been designed with an OER classroom.

There are currently multiple MTH 150 sections available.


A Master's degree in mathematics   or related discipline area is required. A PhD preferred. College teaching experience preferred, particularly experience teaching first and second year undergraduates. Experience with or willingness to learn Moodle, our learning management system, and classroom media is necessary. The successful candidate will possess expertise in learner-centered teaching; use of technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy and the ability to work effectively with a culturally-diverse student body with a variety of learning styles.
