Department Description

The mission of the Department of Pediatrics is 1) to provide state of the art critical care, chronic care, and acute care of children with a full spectrum of pediatric disorders 2) to teach Medical Students, Residents and Fellows to excel in the field of pediatric medicine and to 3) conduct highly meritorious clinical and/or laboratory based investigation in each division program. The Department’s organizational component consists of 14 divisions, various off campus sites and additional cost centers.

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine serves the children of North Carolina in high quality and comprehensive patient-centered care. The division is focused on innovative teaching and groundbreaking research that impacts practice and policy. Division members have been awarded prestigious research grants and are active participants and mentors to those who participate in several distinguished conferences.

This position will assist physicians and serve patients in the UNC Primary Clinic on Franklin Street.

Position Description

THIS IS A TWELVE (12) MONTH TIME-LIMITED POSITION FOR 75% OR 30 HOURS PER WEEK (Tuesday – Friday 8:30 – 5:00).

The Behavioral Health (BH) Clinician/Social Work Practitioner is integrated within a primary health care or sub-specialty outpatient clinic to function as a member of a trauma-informed, culturally competent interdisciplinary team to provide screening, brief evidenced based treatments, and care coordination for consumers of healthcare and their families. This position will lead the development and implementation of fully integrated behavioral health model within the UNC Children’s Primary Care Clinic with the following long-term goals listed under the description of work.

Leadership: Lead the development and implementation of fully integrated behavioral health model within the UNC Children’s Primary Care Clinic with the following long-term goals:
o Increase patient access to BH services
o Improve mental health outcomes
o Decrease utilization of crisis intervention services
o Empower providers and staff to recognize BH needs and identify needed BH interventions
o Educate trainees (medical, nursing, counseling) in IBH care delivery model

Patient Care: Direct patient care delivered by BHC:
o Warm hand-offs for future BH visits to address behavioral health needs
o Individual behavioral health visits for comprehensive assessment and up to 6 behavioral health sessions providing psychotherapy and/or CBT prior to referring for more long-term community-based psychotherapy
o Brief BH assessment of patient to determine disposition after behavioral health need is identified

Care Coordination: Assist patients and families with identification of and access to resources for unmet social determinants of health when applicable as part of BH assessment or intervention

Assessments: BH will conduct brief, evidence-based and developmentally appropriate screening and conduct or arrange for more detailed assessments when indicated.

Interventions:
BH will provide a range of brief, solution-focused treatment for prevention, health promotion, and recovery services, as well as develop longer-term treatment plans for patient when indicated. Assist with ongoing program evaluation and BH focused quality improvement initiatives to ensure delivery of evidence-based practices and measure patient satisfaction and healthcare outcomes.

This position will also be dedicated to the Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic for Gender Wellness, currently providing care through the Pediatric Endocrinology Division, serving patients at the Sub-specialty Clinics at UNC Children’s Hospital for 25% of total effort. The clinic serves pediatric, adolescent and young adult patients seeking gender affirming counseling and care.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The Social Work Practitioner must be licensed in one of the following areas:
- LCSW-Licensed Clinical Social Worker
- LPC – Licensed Professional Counselor
- LMFT – Licensed Marriage/Family Therapist
- LCAS – Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist
- HSP-P Health Services Provider Psychologist
- Or other equivalent licensure

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated proof of effective verbal and written communication skills related to treatment planning. Prefer experience with Epic Electronic Health Record. Prefer experience working with diverse and underprivileged populations.

Required Licenses/Certifications

The Social Work Practitioner must be licensed in one of the following areas:
