Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by September 1, 2019.


Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in earth or atmospheric science or closely related field, in hand by September 1, 2019. Experience with clumped isotope measurements. Experience mentoring at the graduate and undergraduate level to include in the laboratory (i.e. basic laboratory skills, mass spectrometry, etc.).


Brief Description of Duties:

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a postdoctoral associate in the field of stable isotope chemistry of atmospheric gases, with an emphasis on so-called ‘clumped’ isotopes in trace gases. The successful candidate will work in the laboratories of Dr. John Mak (SoMAS) and Dr. Gregory Henkes (Department of Geosciences) and is therefore expected to have robust experience with independently operating both gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometers and vacuum lines.


Project involves carrying out experimental (laboratory/field) and theoretical studies in fundamental research on the intricacies of clumped isotope trace gas systems. Therefore, it will be helpful if the selected applicant has the potential for establishing new internal and external collaborations.


The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills as they are the initial point of contact for students, faculty/staff, parents, and other community stakeholders contacting CAPS. They will utilize strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently, as well as part of a team, with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

    Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of stable isotope chemistry of atmospheric gases, with an emphasis on so-called ‘clumped’ isotopes in trace gases.

    Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.

    Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.

    Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed.

    Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation.  Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
