Instructional Technology Support Specialist Status

Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) is seeking an Instructional Technology Support Specialist whose primary responsibility will be to help maintain the computer hardware and software environment, servers and inventory used in academic general use and department technology for labs and learning spaces, as well as in the Wesleyan IT student office areas. The position will report to the Director of Instructional Technology Systems.

Department Instructional CSIT Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Support academic users with hardware and software needs and troubleshoot problems through telephone conversations or on-site analysis.
  • Stays current with research on instructional design technologies, theories, resources, applications, strategies, processes, methodologies, procedures and practices
  • Coordinate academic hardware and software purchases, complete needs analysis, investigate pricing and solutions, specifies all necessary components to provide a working system in consultation with appropriate personnel
  • Responsible for training and supervising student assistants regarding work with installations, upgrades, and troubleshooting hardware / software failures, and updating inventory / upgrade records.
  • Coordination of academic computing services and projects as related to the campus network
  • Maintains and supports academic general use of department labs and learning spaces for Instructional Technology Services
  • Provides system administration for Instructional Technology Services file servers including, but not limited to user management, resource management, server operating system updates, server hardware updates, application management and backup/restore functions

Other Responsibilities:

The successful incumbent will ensure new services or upgrades are implemented successfully and safeguard the quality and uptime of existing services. It will be critical to be able to manage large projects from start to finish and understand how changes made to systems could impact all entities involved. The successful candidate will be able to use the technology we currently have to improve our system overall, but also be able to stay ahead of the curve with the latest technology to assure our system is reaching its fullest potential. The candidate will need to proactively identify problem areas before they result in service interruptions and appropriately correct or mitigate identified problems or inefficiencies.

Qualifications

The preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education Technology, Information Technology, Computer Science or related work experience
  • Three to five years of experience with educational technologies, hardware and software management
  • Preferred experience with learning management systems, course design, and development in Canvas
  • Must be able to multitask and manage several projects that may be ongoing during the same time
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, time management, and ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues
  • Demonstrated ability to design, architect, and implement complicated technical services and solutions
  • Possess good interpersonal communication skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. Experience with technical documentation is a plus.
  • Demonstrate good organizational skills, be detail oriented, and be adaptable and flexible
