Nature of Work

In addition to performing the duties assigned to full-time faculty members at The College of Coastal Georgia, a Department Chair is expected to carry out the administrative duties of an academic unit. The Department Chair will be responsible for the efficient operation of the Department and supervision of faculty, and will act as the departmental representative in interactions with the College and community.

The Department Chair should have a standard teaching load of 12 credits per academic year and will work with the School Dean to plan their schedule effectively.

Essential Duties

•Lead the preparation of each semester’s course schedule and related pay memo within the department.
•Coordinate and assist with assessment, including unit assessment planning and program/course evaluation, as it relates to accreditation, program reviews.
•Conduct annual reviews of full-time and part-time department faculty and provide recommendations for tenure, promotion, improvement and termination as needed.
•Coordinate the hiring of qualified and diverse full-time and part-time faculty and promote the achievements of faculty within the department and to the institution as a whole.
•Facilitate the service agenda of departmental faculty, including the academic advising process, within the department throughout the year.
•Mentor and encourage department faculty with regard to leadership, scholarly activities and the development of quality curriculum and instruction.
•Collaborate with faculty on departmental decisions and communicate clearly and effectively.
•Advocate and respond to faculty and student concerns through investigation, conflict resolution, and collaboration with the Dean and other offices as needed.
•Develop partnerships (at various levels) to the benefit of the Department and department faculty.
•Act as the main department representative to administration, other offices on campus, current/prospective students, and the community.
•Perform department/school- specific duties as defined by the requirements of the relevant academic discipline(s).
•Perform other essential, but non-regular, duties as requested by the School Dean, PVPAA and/or President.

Minimum Qualifications and Training

• Terminal degree.
• Rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
•Prior teaching experience.
•Excellent communication and human
relation skills.
•Evidence of leadership qualities.
•Administrative experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Training

•Tenured, with rank of Associate Professor or higher.
