Director, Supreme Court Institute - Georgetown University Law Center

The centerpiece of the Supreme Court Institute (SCI) is the Supreme Court Moot Court Program, which taps into the expertise of faculty and outside practitioners to prepare counsel for oral argument before the Court. The SCI offers its moot courts as a public service, at no charge and irrespective of the positions taken by counsel, reflecting a core commitment to the quality of Supreme Court advocacy in all cases.
The Director of the Supreme Court Institute (SCI) directs the SCI Moot Court program, which prepares advocates to argue cases pending in the U.S. Supreme Court, and maximizes the educational benefits of this program for Georgetown Law students and faculty. S/he is an accomplished federal appellate lawyer with clerkship, litigation, and verbal argument experience, who is qualified to run or participate in moot courts on a broad range of issues, and to assist advocates of varying skills and experience. The Director also plans educational programs and events related to the Supreme Court and meets with delegations of foreign jurists and attorneys. Reporting to the Executive Director of SCI and supervising the Assistant Director, the incumbent has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

SCI Moot Court Program
  • Participates as a moot court panelist on one or two panels per sitting, serving as Chief Justice when needed.
  • Recruits five Supreme Court practitioners to serve as “Justices” on each moot court panel, ensuring an appropriate balance of experienced and junior panelists, subject-matter specialists and generalists, and an absence of conflicts of interest.
  • Tracks all moot court requests and follows SCI policies to determine which side in each case has reserved a moot court.
  • Coordinates with each advocate to schedule each moot court and advises counsel about SCI moot court procedures and logistics.
  • Attends all moot courts to welcome participants, instructs the advocate on moot procedures, reminds observers on confidentiality requirements, and thanks panelists for their service.
  • Observes panelists to assess the level of preparation, engagement, and skill as a moot court participant.
  • Reviews information sheets (prepared by student research assistants) distributed to moot court participants and observers to ensure accuracy.

Moot Court & Academic Curricula Integration
  • Coordinates with Legal Practice faculty to incorporate a moot court in the first-year curriculum of every J.D. student.
  • Instructs each Legal Practice class about the moot court the students will observe and the moot court process generally, distributing case materials and suggesting excerpts to assign for reading in preparation for the moot court.
  • Coordinates with other professors who wish to incorporate SCI moot courts into their course curricula.
  • Arranges, with counsel's consent, to conduct moot courts that will likely attract a high level of interest among students and faculty in a venue larger than the SCI moot courtroom to accommodate additional observers.
  • Supervises four student Research Assistants who prepare and issue moot court invitations listing all opposing parties, counsel, and amici to ensure each observer has no affiliation that could pose a conflict of interest, and agrees to our strict confidentiality requirements.

Program and Event Planning
  • Arranges panel discussions, author events, “mock moot courts,” debates, and similar programs related to the Supreme Court, recruiting participants and coordinating with the Office of Special Events.
  • Plans SCI's annual reception marking the end of the Supreme Court's argument term, honoring a person of significance to the work of the Court, and thanking all who volunteered to serve on moot court panels.
  • Participates in annual panel discussions for students and alumni, highlighting significant cases on the Supreme Court docket.
  • Serves as a panelist for mock moot courts organized annually by the Offices of Student Life and Admissions for first-year J.D. orientation, family visiting weekend, and programs for accepted students.
  • Coordinates and meets with delegations of foreign jurists and attorneys, and professors and students visiting from other educational institutions, to discuss the work of the Supreme Court, the U.S. judicial system, SCI's moot court program, and similar topics.

Reports, Budgets, and Moot Courtroom Reservations
  • Prepares SCI's annual budget and writes SCI's Annual Report, which includes statistics and a narrative description of the moot court program each Term, and summarizes SCI's other programs and activities during the corresponding academic year.
  • Edits, proofreads, formats, and finalizes annual report summarizing cases on the Supreme Court's argument docket at the beginning of each term.
  • Completes SCI's budget worksheet and writes an accompanying memorandum justifying anticipated expenditures.
  • Responds to requests from the Office of Student Life, professors, clinics, and student groups to reserve the SCI moot courtroom and maintain a calendar of reservations.

  • J.D. degree
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Supreme Court and appellate litigation experience
  • Experience with presenting verbal arguments in the federal courts of appeals
  • Expertise in Federal appellate Judicial clerkship and teaching
  • Federal verbal argument experience as described above
  • Supreme Court advocacy experience desirable
