Communications Associate - The Berkley Center

Requirements

The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs seeks a more just and peaceful world by deepening knowledge and solving problems at the intersection of religion and global affairs through research, teaching, and engaging multiple publications. Two premises guide the center's work: that a comprehensive examination of religion and norms is critical to address complex global challenges, and that the open engagement of religious and cultural traditions with one another can promote peace.

The Communications Associate ("CA") is responsible for writing, producing, and editing content across a range of media products that drives key organizational messages and communications initiatives and elevates the Berkley Center's ("Center's") reputation for thought leadership and cutting-edge research at the intersection of religion and world affairs. S/he writes, edits, and publishes blogs, op-eds, social media posts, digital features, podcasts, and video scripts. Reporting to the Associate Director for Programs and Outreach, the Communications Associate has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Web Content Development
  • Researches, outlines, drafts, and edits bylined content for Center faculty and some affiliates - often on tight deadlines, where content may be published on Center or external websites.
  • Distills academic reports into audience-driven, easily consumable pieces of content.
  • Manages and occasionally writes for the Berkley Forum (blog).
  • Uploads digital content into content management system.
  • Manages select content projects.

Social Media Content Development
  • Crafts social media content for the organization.
  • Supports execution of social media campaigns for priority initiatives.
  • Assists with newsletters and other mass-mailings.

Multimedia Content Development
  • Develops digital features (including audio/video content) for Center and Georgetown websites.
  • Takes part in multimedia content production from storyboarding to interviewing and editing, occasionally overseeing projects from beginning to end.

Publication/Proposal Editing and Writing
  • Edits publications from initial drafts through to final layout, including providing substantive edits to early drafts.
  • Drafts or edits grant/gift proposals, donor collateral, and short research pieces like background memos.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience writing or editing one or more of the following: newsletters, magazines, annual reports, website articles/stories, campaign brochures, blogs/op-eds, research publications
  • Demonstrated exceptional writing and proofreading skills
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects with interest in religion and world affairs

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to synthesize complex information from different sources and disciplines into compelling arguments
  • An audience-driven approach to writing
  • Experience using web content management systems and social media platforms
  • Strong time management and organizational skills,and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas in a compelling manner
  • Experience producing video and audio products
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in communications and content design
  • Practical knowledge of marketing and branding principles
  • Facility with Adobe software, particularly InDesign
  • Prior coursework in religion, especially at the graduate level
  • Background in creative writing or journalism
