Financial Accounting and Reporting Analyst

Primary Position Function:

This position reports to and functions under the general administrative supervision of the Business Administrative Associate within University Accounting Services in the office of University Accounting and Financial Reporting. The Financial Accounting and Reporting Analyst assists in the areas including, but not limited to: establishment and administration of procedures for university accounting processes; monitoring of Service Desk Manager Accounting queues; performing monthly Eddie Finance Standard reports verification; providing quality customer service/support to University units at all University locations; participating in various special accounting projects, including testing for Banner system and report upgrades; and performing various other complex University Accounting tasks as assigned.

Work is performed in an office setting and is sedentary for the most part. No unusual physical exertion is required. Work environment has frequent interruptions and distractions that create an atmosphere ranging from calm to chaotic. Ability to work under pressure is required to perform a variety of responsibilities and ensure daily operational needs are met.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Review Cross-Foapal application for failed Banner transactions. Notify user of failed transaction and assist in their understanding why the transaction failed and how to correct.
  2. Perform duties inherent to a Unit Security Contact (USC), such as request system access for employees within UAFR, maintain access to distribution lists, and review system access on a quarterly and annual basis.
  3. Work with other functional areas and perform testing of Banner Finance forms and standard financial reports related to Banner or other system upgrades.
  4. Test new applications that are owned by University Accounting & Financial Reporting, such as My-UI-Financials, prior to implementation and during upgrades.
  5. Resolve problems when encountered by departments as a result of posting errors or transfer of funds and/or charges. Assist in their understanding of University policies and procedures.
  6. Reconcile cross tab reports monthly and research discrepancies as needed.
  7. Review and verify accuracy and completeness of Mobius View Standard Finance reports when they are available monthly after month-end closing.
  8. Perform complex reconciliation for payroll deduction clearing and agency funds.
  9. Monitor My-UI-Financials shared email box and respond to customer inquiries about My-UI-Financials.
  10. Manage Service Desk Manager OBFS General Accounting queues. This involves contacting clients on their questions, answering their questions or assigning the ticket to the correct person or area in a timely manner.
  11. Work closely with AITS when modifying and creating new finance Eddie or Mobius View reports.
  12. Maintain JV Feeder Document Prefixes report by verifying contact information on a quarterly basis.
  13. Serve on committees/teams as assigned as a representative of University Accounting and Financial Reporting, such as the UAFR Professional Development Implementation Team.
  14. Perform other assigned duties which would be appropriate for a Financial Accounting and Reporting Analyst as assigned by UAFR management.

Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accountancy or a related field AND two (2) years of professional level accounting experience; OR Possession of a current registration as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, or a valid License to practice Public Accounting; OR Master’s degree in Accountancy or a related field.

Preferred:

CPA Certification

Successful candidates will possess the following:

  • Basic understanding of fund accounting principles and a working knowledge of how to apply them in a public University setting within the State of Illinois to ensure compliance with the various State of Illinois policies, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Analytical skills in order to perform complex financial analysis of business transactions within a higher education setting and the ability to enforce of various applicable policies and regulations while still providing superior customer service.
  • Proficient computer skills and advanced knowledge of applicable computer systems, such as Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Ability to produce complex financial reports and provide detailed information with accuracy and clarity, and have excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to propose policies/procedures that improve and/or maintain the effectiveness of daily financial operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills to effectively present information and respond to requests for guidance and/or clarification.
  • Ability to address and resolve difficult and complex issues/problems; strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to multi-task and produce accurate, detail-oriented work to meet stringent deadlines; creativity in problem-solving and exercising independent judgment and discretion.

Highly successful candidates will also possess the following:

  • Proficient in database, query and reporting tools, such as Microsoft Access.

Salary and Appointment Information:

This is a full-time Civil Service Accounting Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the position closes. Salary is commensurate with experience.
