Through a Global Health Technologies minor, international summer internships, and post-baccalaureate fellowships, these early stage technologies are prototyped, evaluated, refined, deployed and scaled across the world.
Rice 360° has become a leader in global health education, research and implementation, focused on experiential and problem-based learning, and recognized as a model of excellence by Science magazine and the US National Academy of Engineering.
Rice 360° works closely with research and program partners in the developing world, collaborators within Rice, the Texas Medical Center and other educational and medical institutions in the U.S. and across the globe. Rice 360° has staff permanently located in Blantyre, Malawi to support partnerships with the Malawi Polytechnic, the Malawi College of Medicine and a long-standing relationship with the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Working under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Financial Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of complete and accurate financial records for Rice 360° Institute for Global Health. This includes:
- assisting in the management and tracking of gift, grant and institutional funds;
- review and processing of all financial documents ensuring that expenses follow university and sponsor guidelines and that sufficient funds are available on the appropriate fund;
- reconciliation of departmental records with university accounting system;
- preparation of detailed accounting reports and financial projections.
Business administration, accounting, finance, or related field.

Experience Preferred- Rice University experience
- Experience with Banner
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- User knowledge and demonstrated experience of financial systems
- Understanding and ability to apply basic accounting skills and concepts
- Advanced communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal audiences and client groups
- Basic project management skills and ability to contribute as part of a project team

External – outside visitors, dignitaries and vendors
Physical DemandsRequires working at a computer for extended periods of up to eight hours per day.
Working Conditions- Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Occasional evenings and weekends
- Performs structured analysis; conducts data mining; identifies, clarifies, and investigates discrepancies and exceptions; proactively develops solutions and processes
- Maintains, reconciles, reviews, combines, and validates financial data sets and accounts
- Contributes to development of budget, forecasting, and analyses
- Runs and analyzes financial reports; assists in preparation of management information reports
- Performs preliminary analysis, recognizes exceptions and recommends solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes
- Ensures work complies with complex internal policies and external regulations which may require interpretation
- Serves as a first line resource to client groups on matters in work unit
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Assists in grant reporting to funding agencies
- Prepares grant funding reports such as renewal reports and others as required by the funding agency
- Assists with the research proposal process and other requests for funding to ensure the inclusion of all elements required for submission to a funding agency and compliance with university policies
- Coordinates post-award administration, including payment of sub-award invoices, reporting to faculty of fund balances, expenditures, projections, etc.
- Assists in the management of gift, grant and institutional funds
- Monitors budgets categories and expenditures
- Prepares and processes student hiring and payroll
- Prepares and processes expenditure documents, transfers, reallocations, reimbursements, etc.
- Reconciles departmental financial records to the university accounting records
- Designs and maintains digital and hard copy file systems for all departmental financial records
