Position Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Molecular Virology (IMV), in collaboration with the Departments of Oncology / McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, or Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, seek to hire a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor. The faculty hire is expected to develop a robust research program aimed at generating new insights into the replication and / or pathogenesis of viruses with DNA genomes.

The IMV and tenure home department will act as interactive partners in this hire and will mutually support this position with substantial, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and other resources. The primary department affiliation among the above-listed departments, will be determined after consultation with the successful candidate based on the scope of their research program. Additionally, the successful candidate will become an affiliate of the Madison Virology Program, joining a vibrant community of virologists that complement and strengthen the UW's outstanding breadth in biological research.

This position is part of a unique, synergistic cluster hiring initiative, "The Metastructures of Viral Infection", which focuses on bringing new faculty to campus studying epigenetic modifications and structural interactions driven by viral infection. The faculty hire is expected to develop a research program geared toward understanding how DNA viruses replicate, persist, and cause disease. Candidates working on all aspects of DNA viral infections will receive full consideration, but with preference given to those focusing on DNA viral genome 3-D structure or epigenetic modification, or links between DNA viruses and antiviral defenses including intrinsic, innate, or adaptive immunity. There are expectations for synergy with the two other cluster hire faculty that focus on Viral RNA Biology or Cryo-EM-dependent Structural Virology. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will pursue future federal program project grant applications in conjunction with other virology faculty colleagues within and beyond this cluster hire initiative.

The appointment will be made at either the Assistant (tenure track) or Associate (tenured) Professor level based on the accomplishments of the successful candidate.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or closely related field required. The area of focus required includes study of the replication and / or pathogenesis of viruses with DNA genomes.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Candidates should display a productive record of established scholarship of national and international significance in DNA virus biology, including, but not limited to, viral DNA 3-D structure or epigenetic modification, or links between DNA viruses and antiviral defenses including intrinsic, innate, or adaptive immunity.

Candidates for associate or full professor rank must meet criteria for appointment at rank per UW School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for appointment and promotion on the tenure track.
