Basic Function

The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Art Department in the Languages, Arts, and Social Sciences (LASS) division at the Woodbridge campus is seeking a full-time photography faculty member with demonstrated ability to teach technical photographic skills as well as aesthetics and critical thinking about the medium in a portfolio-intensive program. As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to: meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and College duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations. Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization and advise students.
Responsible for establishing and maintaining contacts with industry, developing a program advisory council, and supporting the AAS program, to include assisting AAS graduates with meaningful employment opportunities within industry.
NOTE: This is not an entry-level position, as We are seeking a faculty member with college-level teaching and committee experience, with demonstrated program leadership and curricular innovation.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned master’s degree or master of fine arts degree (MFA) with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Photography. The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate would be qualified to teach and have experience teaching digital photography, black & white darkroom photography, history of photography, studio lighting, and video courses. A specialization in Photography or Digital Imaging is preferred. Minimum two years of college-level (community college preferred) teaching experience and a regional/national exhibition record. Successful candidates must be able to teach black and white darkroom photography, digital photography, studio lighting, video, and the history of photography. The successful candidate should be skilled in both fine art and commercial/applied photography. Demonstrated understanding and experience in teaching video, visual literacy, and critical thinking are also desired, as is experience with contemporary applications of photography in social media. Experience maintaining a chemical and digital darkroom. Curriculum experience desired along with new course design and development in various modalities (online, on campus, hybrid).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skilled in both fine art and commercial/applied photography. Must be able to teach black and white darkroom photography, digital photography, studio lighting, video, and the history of photography at the community college level and/or four­ year college level; familiarity with instructional technologies; ability to speak and write well; Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. demonstrated commitment to advising students; experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at NOVA.
