About the UnitThe Department of Anesthesia & Critical Care is a clinical academic department at the University of Chicago. The department has been continuously productive not only in its scientific contributions, but also in providing outstanding basic medical care in anesthesiology. Its members have helped to establish the role of anesthesiologists as consultants in fields such as intensive care, oxygen therapy, the recovery room, and inhalation therapy. From a one-member section in 1928, the department has grown to a 60+ member faculty; the department includes 50+ residents, 20+ nurse-anesthetists, 14 administrators and 70+ staff members. Faculty members are active nationally and internationally in the field, and former trainees of the department hold prominent academic positions in the United States and throughout the world.

Job FamilyHealthcare & Medical Services

Responsible for patient care for members of the University community. Provides services relating to health training, athletic health, behavioral health, and rehabilitation across the University. Assists individuals coping with personal issues, disabilities, and life-threatening diseases.

Career Track and Job LevelAdvanced Practice Provider

Provides direct primary health care to patients as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician/Physician Assistant. Uses knowledge from advanced degrees and/or certifications/licenses.

P2: Requires knowledge and experience in own discipline; still acquiring higher-level knowledge and skills. Builds knowledge of the organization, processes and customers. Solves a range of straightforward problems. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction.

Role ImpactIndividual Contributor

ResponsibilitiesThe job provides professional support and solves straightforward problems in health promotion and disease prevention. May order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays.

1) Interprets assessments, treatments, outcomes, work and disability status, and screenings in a thorough manner. Maintains clear and concise records for individual and corporate clients to meet the requirements of the department, the company and any applicable standards or laws., 2) Analyzes test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment., 3) Has a solid understanding about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, or herbal remedies., 4) Participates in counseling patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. Interprets patient's condition quickly and concisely and determine the best course of treatment. This can include ordering appropriate laboratory or imaging studies, discussing patient with the Emergency Physician and/or referring patient to consultants., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Unit-specific Responsibilities:

1) Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop care plans for patients with planned anesthesia and surgery within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols.
2) Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the date in the patient's record; screen patients to determine the need for specialized testing, making referrals to other disciplines as indicated, write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; provide tailored perioperative medication and fasting instructions; obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care, and assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
3) Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient. Perform preanesthesia evaluation prior to minor or ambulatory procedures, identifying details relevant to formulating a safe anesthetic plan, and communicate pertinent information effectively with the patient and anesthesia care team.

4) Evaluate patients for discharge from the post-anesthesia care unit following minor procedures and address any concerns with perioperative care.

5) Conduct an evaluation of inpatients for whom anesthesia consultation has been requested, communicate recommendations with the primary care team, provide ongoing follow up on results of recommendations, and facilitate the rapid optimization of inpatients prior to surgery.

6) Evaluate outcomes of care delivered to patients and initiates changes in the nursing approach accordingly.
7) Participate in development of collaborative practice arrangements.
8) Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient.
9) Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.  Select appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
10)Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
11) Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
12) May participate in health education in the community and in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician.
13) May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
14) Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.

15) May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.

Unit-preferred Competencies

1) Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and teaching skills.

2) Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.

3) Ability to interview and obtain medical information.

4) Ability to consolidate medical information into a cohesive note, and formulate an appropriate perioperative anesthetic plan, after provision of appropriate training.

5) Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire.

6) Once licensed and as needed, willingness to apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled substance license and DEA number.

7) Willingness to be privileged and credentialed through UCMC Nurse Recruitment Office prior to start date.

8) Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and strong organizational skills.

9) Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical skill.

10) Basic typing and computer skills required. Proficiency in the use of computers.

Education, Experience, and CertificationsMinimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

1) Advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing.

Experience:

1) Minimum one year nursing experience in an inpatient/outpatient/surgical setting.

2)Knowledge and understanding of anesthesia types and specific patient care to such.

Licenses and Certifications:

1) Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse (APN) license by start date. Current license as a Registered Nurse.

2) Ability to obtain Illinois Controlled Substance License and a current DEA license.
