DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 61 faculty, approximately 330 additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range research funded from a diverse range of federal, state and private agencies.

The department is comprised of 17 career staff, and 167 Master's and Ph.D. students. All working together to generate high caliber research in a broad range of fields and provides an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students who contribute to the department’s academic reputation. The department maintains a large undergraduate course of study that prepares pure and applied majors (over 2400) in Mathematics, as well as 57 other majors across the campus, with the strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in a variety of career options.

The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas totaling approximately $20M/Yr. and an instructional program that enrolls approximately 30,000 graduates and undergraduates per year. As the fundamental language of science, Mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future.

The department is the home of The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM) consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. And the home of the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project an intersegmental education project in California. Applies professional student services concepts, policies and procedures in the completion of Student Services assignments that are of limited scope and impact.

Receives instructions on most work assignments, and regularly consults with Student Services specialists in the course of completing increasingly complex assignments. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing Student Services situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Exercises some judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Instructional Support, serve as initial point of contact for the Department of Mathematics Student Affairs office. Primary responsibility is to provide general intake advising to undergraduate students and triage other academic advising services as needed, providing guidance to undergraduate students and other constituents on UCSD and department policies and procedures.

Provide individuals with accurate information and appropriate referrals to various campus offices/resources. Assist with instructional support functions related to quarterly enrollment and registration. Independently catalog and make initial recommendations on student undergraduate petitions. Responsible for all student employee timekeeping and payroll functions. Provide general office management and administrative support in highly computerized and team-oriented environment

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities, especially in a customer service setting, with the ability to deal with exceptions to policy and devise appropriate viable alternatives to non-standard situations.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must articulate complex information to a variety of individuals with broad educational, cultural, and language barriers, using tact, diplomacy, sensitivity and discretion.

  • Solid interpersonal and listening skills. The ability to deal effectively and sensitively with people in crisis in a professional and concerned manner. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously requiring detail and accuracy.

  • Experience and proven ability to provide a high level of independent support, with initiative and responsiveness, under the challenge and stress of frequent interruptions, frequently changing priorities, and strict deadlines.

  • Skill and ability to prepare and maintain a variety of documents and information, in paper or digital format, clearly, completely and accurately. Ability to ensure all are logically arranged and readily available, using alpha-numeric filing systems and electronic document storage.

  • Multicultural competencies and ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively on telephone, email and in person, with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy, at all levels within and outside the University, to promote positive relationships.

  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality required by law for student records. Ability to work with diverse populations.
