Position SummaryThe Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (LCS) at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU, CVM) invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in Large Animal Medicine. This position is being offered as a Health Programs (HP) faculty position with the title of Attending Veterinarian – Teaching Center for Dairy Professionals (TCDP). HP appointments are unique to Michigan State University’s Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, and Veterinary Medicine and Nursing and were created to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services and clinical research.

The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic and innovative team that is committed to world-class research, outreach and training to meet the needs of the dairy industry. Candidates must have a veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent) and be eligible for licensing in the State of Michigan (an academic license option exists).

This appointment will be a 1-year fixed term appointment. Continued reappointment is anticipated, subject to continued external sponsorship of the TCDP and the continued clinical service association between the MSU Veterinary Medical Center and Green Meadow Farms, Inc.Green Meadow Farms milks approximately 3,700 cows in two parlors and has participated in the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine teaching program for fifteen years. Applied research at the facility is encouraged and supported.

The successful candidate is expected to provide clinical instruction of students participating in dairy medicine and production medicine clerkships at the TCDP, with primary oversight of the production medicine activities.Experience/expertise in herd-level monitoring and application preferred. Supervision of large animal residents and interns, including back up support after-hours (nights and weekends).Additional duties include providing clinical services to Green Meadow Farms including but not limited to medical and surgical treatment of sick cows and calves, reproductive management, herd level problem-solving and resolution, oversight of on-farm diagnostic procedures, and the recording of complete case treatment records in databases such as Dairy Comp 305.

Maintaining excellent communication and a positive relationship with the owners and managers of Green Meadow Farms and other LCS-TCDP faculty is a key responsibility.Attending various scheduled meetings (some in East Lansing) is expected and developing collaborations with other CVM/MSU faculty on applied research projects is strongly encouraged.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Veterinary Medicine

Minimum RequirementsCandidates must have a veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent) and be eligible for licensing in the State of Michigan (an academic license option exists). Experience in a primary dairy practice or within a large dairy herd, as well as analytical and computer database skills. Interest in nutrition and managing metabolic disease is desirable, but not required.
