Description of Department: The Dean of Students Office provides leadership to enhance the student experience by providing services that promote the personal development, health and wellbeing, and academic success of all students at SUNY Oswego. The Dean of Students Office responds to the needs of students encountering personal or academic problems through a care network. The Dean of Students office works with all campus units to maintain a positive learning environment. The Dean of Students Office oversees the administrative processes in Campus Life, Student Conduct, Health Educator, Alcohol and Other Drugs Coordinator and the Behavioral Intervention Team.
The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for an Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students. This is a full-time, 12-month position.

Description of Responsibilities:
The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and serves as second in charge of the Division. The AVP/DOS provides leadership to enhance the student experience by providing services that promote the personal development, health and well-being, and academic success of all students at SUNY Oswego. The AVP/DOS works with all campus units to maintain a positive learning environment and directs the administrative processes that respond to the needs of students encountering personal or academic problems.
Under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, the AVP/DOS serves as the senior administrative officer for the division in the absence of the Vice President and partners with senior administration to establish division-wide priorities. The AVP/DOS provides leadership and supervision for departments within the Division as assigned by the VPSAEM which include the Dean of Students Office and Conduct and Compliance. Additionally, the AVP/DOS coordinates a team of student affairs professionals charged with policy and systems development and real-time response to critical incidents and student emergencies.
- Provides services to students through coordination with other University divisions, and enhances the student experience on campus through the promotion of cooperative working relationships which foster access, persistence, graduation, and career placement.
- Promotes and supports the conceptual understanding of the role of Student Affairs in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
- Participates in developing campus-wide policies and procedures, which enrich student life while supporting both academics and development areas.
- Provides oversight to various Student Affairs units as assigned by the Vice President.
In addition, the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students will be expected to display a commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
- An earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university in counseling, psychology, higher education, student personnel, or a closely related field
- Five years of administrative experience in higher education at the level of director, experience should include both supervisory and budgetary responsibilities.
- Strong budgeting, operations, and systems experience
- A track record as a strong student advocate
- Demonstrated leadership
- Proficiency developing trust with students and ability to relate well to students
- A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Demonstrated management/administrative skills (for policy, budget, supervisory, and program development and evaluation responsibilities)
- Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain interpersonal professional relationships and excellent analytical and written communication and presentation skills
- Extensive knowledge of higher education, student affairs philosophy, best practices, and the policies and procedures of a higher education institution
- Knowledge of emerging trends and needs in the student population
- Demonstrated experience working with and advocating for ethnically and culturally diverse student populations
