Overview

The San Diego State University Police Department is seeking entry level police officer cadet applicants.  Officers selected for this position will work in an environment with diverse populations which includes students, faculty and staff members and other community members.  Applicants will demonstrate experience and or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of historically underrepresented groups.

Position Information

This recruitment will be used to establish a pool of candidates for current and future full-time permanent (probationary) appointments.  Applicants will be required to work a rotating shift schedule, to include:  Weekends, holidays, day shifts and night shifts as assigned.

Applicants interested in this position must take and pass the POST certified “Pellet-B” entry level peace officer written test, or have taken and passed the “Pellet-B” entry level test within the past six months.  In addition to the “Pellet-B” test, applicants must also pass the POST physical agility test.  Subjects applying for the cadet/entry level peace officer position must be qualified for the position and be of good moral character as determined by a comprehensive and thorough background investigation established by POST guidelines and applicable laws governing background investigations for peace officers.  Candidates must also take and pass a panel interview, a chief’s interview, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, and a medical examination.

The Cadet is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity.  Incumbents attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified training academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn peace officer.  Appointments to this classification are temporary in nature and typically do not exceed seven (7) months.  Upon successful completion of the required P.O.S.T. training within the required timeframe and at the discretion of management, the peace office cadet may be appointed to the classification of peace officer (Class Code 8350) on a probationary basis.

The primary responsibility of the Cadet is to attend the prescribed training sessions to learn the principles, practices, and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement, as well as codified in case law.  The Cadet also receives training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques.  Under close supervision, the Cadet may assist other police officer cadets in the performance of their duties.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $3,576 per month.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

• Must be 21 years by graduation of the POST Academy; there is no maximum age limit.
• High school diploma or equivalency.
• Valid California Class C (Class 3) driver's license.
• Eligibility to attend a certified P.O.S.T. basic training academy.
