Capella University seeks out faculty who combine top academic credentials with working or practitioner experience in the fields they teach. Capella seeks Dissertation Mentors to provide direction and supportive interaction to learners to ensure dissertations are consistent with prevailing standards for scholarship, while simultaneously supporting a positive learner experience.The School of Education offers a PhD in Nursing Education designed to prepare learners for nurse educator roles in higher ed and adult education, and is focused on educational theory as it relates to nursing.
Responsibilities of Mentors:
- Successful mentors have the ability to guide and coach learners through the dissertation process by promoting a positive, collaborative relationship that enhances learner engagement, satisfaction, retention and success. Mentors are committed to providing timely direction and support to mentees throughout the dissertation phase of the program. Mentors may also participate in the comprehensive exam preparation phase as well.
- Mentors have quantitative and/or qualitative research knowledge and background, and the ability to understand and evaluate all aspects of the research process, including application. They also have an in-depth understanding of the end-to-end research process (dissertation design, execution, and completion) while working with mentees as a dissertation supervisor and chair of the dissertation committee. Mentors apply their in-depth knowledge of IRB standards, regulations, and processes at each stage of the dissertation process and consult with expert colleagues, related literature and other available school resources when research methods and design questions or concerns arise.
- Mentors monitor, evaluate and guide learner progress, including establishing and discussing dissertation expectations and criteria-based assessment techniques with mentees. Mentors also assess mentee's work and ensure the achievement of quality compliance standards for research prior to submittal to IRB.
- Mentors ensure the efficient administration of the dissertation process for mentees by implementing Capella policies and procedures (including milestone procedures and IRB regulations), and manage the dissertation committee through timely and effective communication about progress, feedback, or concerns.
Part-time faculty engage in a continuous relationship with Capella, and we are committed to providing work assignments on an ongoing quarterly basis. Only part-time faculty members may participate in Mentoring or Committee work assignments or any other work assignment that may span four or more quarters.
All faculty candidates will be required to complete an unpaid faculty development course as a pre-requisite for employment. This is an essential part of the selection process for both the faculty member and Capella.
- Each faculty member will have a workload that varies based upon his/her expertise and the needs of the graduate nursing programs. Following are the accountabilities expected for faculty in the primary areas of responsibility:
- Course Participation: Provides expertise in subject matter; facilitates course discussions ensuring active participation among learners creating entries at least 3-6 times per week; responds to learner inquiries within 24-48 hours; assesses learner assignments and engagement; provides appropriate feedback, coaching and reinforcement of effective critical thinking; reports at risk learners to appropriate school staff; encourages learner participation in course-end evaluation forms; provide innovative input designed to make teaching practices more effective; adheres to quality standards and defines quality at course level in line with departmental and university norms.
- Curriculum Development: Participates in the design and development of courses and course materials including course plans, objectives, outcomes, teaching aids, activities and evaluation tools. Ensures sensitivity to race, gender and disability in curriculum design, course content and study materials
- School Governance and Faculty Committees: Actively participates in appropriate school and university committees and councils
- Virtual attendance at faculty meetings, Capella-sponsored faculty development offerings, and other events is required.
- Infrequent travel to attend commencement and other major events may be requested, but not required.
Variety and Complexity of Work Expected:
- Developing course content, translating subject matter and facilitating complex learning in a web- based environment
- Resolving learner/academic focused problems relative to achievement of academic goals; requires independent judgment and decision making
- Responsibilities are generally not prescribed and have broad parameters that will lead to the mastery of the subject matter and application or practice of learned proficiencies in the professional field
- Positively impacts learner retention and persistence
- Acts under general guidance and collegial consultation regarding development of course content and providing constructive input regarding university practices
- Previous experience preferred in dissertation mentoring and advising, and/or dissertation committee work.
- Graduate level teaching experience of 3 years or more; online teaching experience preferred.
- Significant scholar - practitioner experience in the field, plus a demonstrated capability of doing research, evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed journals, or journals, and/or conference presentations, specifically in the field of nursing.
- Evidence of supporting learner success and commitment to teaching in an online environment.
- Demonstrated contributions and commitment to the field of nursing specifically, via publishing, professional practice, and/or professional association involvement.
Significant scholarly productivity as demonstrated by:
- Research/scholarship funding.
- Peer-reviewed data-based publications.
- Peer-reviewed data-based presentations at regional and national meetings.
- Peer-review activities (grants, journals, meeting abstracts).
- Demonstrated contribution to the discipline including publishing, committee involvement, or professional association involvement
- A PhD is required in Nursing, from a regionally accredited institution. We may consider PhDs' in Adult or Higher Education. (DNP faculty should apply to nurse faculty roles in the School of Nursing & Health Sciences)
- A Master of Science in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution is required.
Certificates, licenses and registrations
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the United States
- Must be able to travel 0-10% of time.
- Must be able to lift 20 lbs.

- Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job.
- Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant
