The Associate Dean role for the Schools of Business and Technology, is a blend of business experience and thinking (i.e., familiarity with revenue-generating educational models, results-oriented organizations, the use of data and analytics in the improvement process, and managing complex, remote work forces); and academic/professional experience, credibility, and acumen (i.e., knowledge of and commitment to competency-based learning, familiarity with accreditation, and understanding of trends in business education).

The Associate Dean is the chief administrative and operations officer for the school and is responsible for: 1) collaborating with the Dean, Market, and Products lead to implement the strategic vision; 2) overseeing the internal operations; 3) developing talent for the school. This highly cross-functional role is accountable for overseeing critical growth initiatives, ensuring the school maintains a strong academic presence, and ensuring that the faculty provide relevant and high-quality learning outcomes that will support learner success.

The Associate Dean has operational accountability across the school. This leader needs to be effective in the areas of program and curriculum management, faculty affairs, learner support and success, school operations and the ability to represent the Dean and school externally as needed.

Strategic Management & Development:

  • Collaborate with the Dean and Market and Products (M&P) team to ensure programs align with overall university strategy and with profession trends and accreditation standards.
  • Oversee accreditation efforts, including resource allocation, report generation and site visit management.
  • Implement a cross-functional strategic plan that ensures the school successfully meets organizational, external market and learner success goals.
  • Consistently demonstrate leadership practices that result in high quality and consistent organizational effectiveness.
  • May represent the school of externally to employers, professional networks and with academic audiences at the direction of the Dean.

Operational Management:

  • Collaborate with the Dean and Market Director to develop and execute a school strategic and operational plan to meet targets for market positioning, instructional cost, learner success, learner experience, and course, program, and learning outcomes.
  • Provide oversight to faculty scheduling/assignments to assure cost effectiveness (cost-per-registration, core utilization, etc.), equity/fairness (work load units and distribution), and compliance (regulatory and accreditation; assuring appropriate credentialing).
  • Manage and provide direction to the curriculum definition and course development processes (quarterly course intake process, SME assignment, external validation, project plan monitoring, contact/collaboration with curriculum architect and OPUX leadership).
  • Lead efforts to align school/department’s activities with supporting stakeholders (i.e., Academic Affairs, Learner Affairs, Learner Services and Operations, Course Development, IT, etc.).
  • Ensure the school’s compliance with Capella’s academic and related policies.
  • Plan and execute successful school and programmatic accreditation efforts, including the development of self-study and periodic monitoring reports; this includes being the main contact/collaborator with the accreditation department.
  • Monitor quality-related program and course data (EOCE, persistence, PSOL) and direct responsive continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Provide oversight for management of escalated learner incidents.
  • Understand and value Capella’s competency-based learning model and promote the model in the school/department’s teaching philosophy, tools, best practices, academic policies, and within the national business educational leadership agenda.
  • Manage the school/department-wide fiscal annual operating plan (AOP) and achieve key annual operating targets.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives in learner success and graduation, faculty engagement, academic quality and curricula at the school level.
  • Accountable for the progress and success of doctoral learners and oversee the identification and development of doctoral faculty
  • Manage the work of school governance councils (assigning council chairs and faculty chair liaisons, ensuring alignment of council work with strategic plan, monitoring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, assuring formal action is taken on council decisions and results are documented).

Talent Management:

  • In partnership with the College Vice President, Dean, and various Human Resource Leaders:
  • Create an operational infrastructure for the school that supports the external focus and efforts of the Dean.
  • Create and implement a faculty plan that supports the achievement of school and department quality and financial goals.
  • Recruit, lead, manage and develop the leadership team for the school (hiring, onboarding, professional development, coaching, monitoring KPIs and collaborating on responsive continuous quality improvement efforts when opportunities occur).
  • Set performance standards and goals for faculty chairs, review performance results and provide timely and meaningful feedback and coaching to improve overall quality of instruction and course performance.
  • Promote professional development throughout school; create opportunities for leadership team growth and model professional development for the School of Business and Technology leadership team.
  • Ensure that leadership within the school is accountable for the engagement and appropriate empowerment of leaders and faculty.
  • Maintain a succession plan for key positions within the school that supports talent assessment process and is committed to building a robust talent pipeline.
  • Understand that the company’s workforce is a source of competitive advantage and that organizational health is paramount for long-term sustainable success.
  • Demonstrated distinguished written and oral language skills
  • Strong computer experience, which must include ability to work effectively with MS Office suite products, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Must be comfortable with change and a culture of continuous improvement
  • Outstanding team leadership skills and an ability to convey information clearly and build consensus and enthusiasm through both formal and informal communication
  • Attention to detail and ability to translate big ideas into implementation
  • Demonstrated cross-functional and situational leadership capabilities
  • Prefer someone who is intellectually curious and innovative
  • Minimum 5 years teaching in a relevant educational setting or equivalent expertise applicable to educational along with demonstrated leadership experience.  Significant experience as a practitioner in the field a plus.
  • Significant and progressively increasing responsibility in academic administration in college/university settings.  Experience should include direct supervisory experience.  Previous teaching experience, preferably in a college or university setting at multiple levels; a distinguished record in supporting, developing and promoting academic programs, including regional and specialized accreditation; experience leading teams and working in a matrix environment; and the ability to travel as needed (up to 10%).

Education:

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a related discipline from a regionally accredited university
