The Department of Biological Sciences at NC State (housed in the College of Sciences) provides educational opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students and conducts research in a variety of areas in modern biology. The Life Sciences First Year Program (LSFY) is a joint venture of the College of Sciences (COS) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). LSFY serves first-year students who come to NC State intending to major in one of eight life science undergraduate degree programs. The LSFY Advising Team is responsible for academic advising of all LSFY students until they matriculate into their degree program.

Essential Job Duties

This full-time 12-month professional academic advisor position involves the proactive advising of students (primarily first-year freshmen) in the Life Sciences First Year Program (LSFY) as part of a team of LSFY advisors and under the guidance of the LSFY Director. This position will be expected to become familiar with the requirements of the curricula within the life sciences at NC State, including Biochemistry, Nutrition Science, and Plant Biology within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as Biological Sciences, Genetics, Microbiology, and Zoology within the College of Sciences. Additionally, this position will advise assigned students about the requirements for these curricula and monitor advisees’ progress toward fulfillment of the requirements for declaring a major and for attaining the baccalaureate degree. The position will also be expected to teach multiple course sections (primarily LSC 103) to first-year students, focusing on issues related to the transition to college, exploration of majors of interest, and reflection on personal interests and aptitudes. The position will report to the LSFY Director.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The position will work closely with a team of advisors under the guidance of the LSFY Director to plan and participate in orientation, open house, and other activities intended to make students more familiar with the curricula in life sciences and other opportunities at NC State. The position will eventually be expected to take a leadership role in one of these areas, after consultation with the advising team and the LSFY Director. If the successful candidate and LSFY Director agree, the candidate may take on substantially greater responsibilities in another realm (for example, in event planning); this could result in a corresponding reduction in advising and teaching load, at the discretion of the LSFY Director.

Minimum Education/Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Prefer a baccalaureate degree in a life science or related discipline; an advanced degree in the life sciences, education, counseling, or similarly relevant field, experience advising first year college students, and at least 2 years of experience advising at the college level. The successful applicant should have demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills and will display a commitment to working with a team of advisors, staff, and faculty to improve student success.
