The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a distinguished research and teaching facility of East Carolina University School of Medicine consisting of approximately 50 people.
This department provides an academic base for teacher-scientists employed by the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in the disciplines of microbiology, immunology, molecular biology and other related disciplines. The department provides instruction to medical students, dental students, and graduate students. The department also provides guidance and research experience to graduate students seeking advanced degrees in microbiology and immunology. The department also offers a postdoctoral research training program. The department supports an array of faculty (16)-directed research programs of which many are supported by extramural grants and/or contracts. The department provides service to the school, university, state, nation, and to the profession by activities of faculty members on committees, study sections, in professional organizations, as consultants, and through other activities.

Job Duties

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, invites applications for two tenure-track or fixed-term faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. These positions are research intensive and are intended for individuals who will develop and maintain federally-funded, independent research programs in the areas of molecular immunology and immunopathogenesis. Successful candidates will have significant protected time to establish their research programs and will be expected to participate in teaching medical, dental, and graduate students. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications. These new faculty positions will be supported by generous laboratory space, state salary support, and a competitive research start-up package. The Department has 15 full-time faculty, an active doctoral studies program, and state-of-the art instrumentation. Onsite facilities include those for flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, live animal imaging, laser capture microdissection, phosphorimaging, and electron microscopy. In addition, the Brody School of Medicine has a modern AAALAC-accredited animal care facility and a well-trained veterinary staff. ECU is located in Greenville, NC, a small city with a population of 90,000, approximately 80 miles east of Raleigh and a short ride from the Crystal Coast beaches and the Outer Banks.

Minimum Education/Experience

PhD or MD from an appropriately accredited institution in Microbiology/Immunology, a basic science field, or other related discipline.
Teaching and Research experience with a strong publication record.
Appointment at the Associate Professor level requires a strong record of continuous research productivity and funding including current, transferable, R01-level, extramural support and strong evidence of successful service in teaching.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Preference will be given to those who complement existing faculty strengths in autoimmunity, allergic disease, and/or immune regulation.
