Job PostingThe University of Connecticut, Information Technology Services (ITS), is filling a position for a Linux Administrator. The selected candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently but also capable and willing to work effectively in a team environment.Under the supervision of a designated team leader, this position provides technical support including installation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem solving in support of the University’s central Linux servers. This position researches, designs, implements, and supports systems based on the Linux Server Operating Systems to support University business and academic applications.The incumbent in this position may lead projects and is expected to have knowledge and understanding of Linux server operating systems and the ability to apply a wide range of problem solving and resource management techniques. For the Operating Systems Programmer Analyst 1 level, the incumbent is considered a beginner and will work under the guidance of more senior technical staff. The University of Connecticut is also a Carnegie Foundation Research University; a prestigious honor shared by only the nation's top higher education institutions.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES• Assists with diagnosing and resolving errors in Linux Server OS, and subsystem components.• Assists with automating routine tasks using batch tools and scripting.• Supports a production environment during defined maintenance periods as well as outside of normal working hours to insure minimal impact to users.• Programs applications to assist with management of computer resources such as database applications.• Creates documentation about technical and usage procedures and methodologies.• Participates effectively as a team member on technical projects.• Assists in the evaluation and selection of program products and hardware.• Performs related duties as required. Additional duties performed at the level of Operating Systems Programmer Analyst 2 (UCP 7) • Installs and manages OS upgrades, patches, troubleshooting and disaster recovery.• Manages accounts, disk space, and other system resources.• Installs and manages Web services such as Apache and Tomcat or other related services.• Works with complex systems integration issues including activities associated with various computer platforms, such as data warehouse, web applications and server, communication and networking technology.• Consults with and supports end users. Additional duties performed at the level of Operating Systems Programmer Analyst 3 (UCP 9)
- Manages the evaluation and implementation of new product technologies, but with a familiarity of a variety of enterprise-class infrastructure disciplines.Researches and recommends innovative, automated approaches for enterprise infrastructure management, upgrades, or improvements, while adhering to technical or budgetary constraints.
- Creates strategies for Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery (BCP/DR).
- Submits written project plans as required by management.
- Creates system documentation and technical diagrams.
- Coordinates between associates and team members as part of large project implementations.
- Mentors less experienced analysts in the areas of technical best practices, project management, and team dynamics.
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.At least one year of highly technical experience or training/certifications in a computer field.Working knowledge and understanding of enterprise Linux Systems and related software.Evidence of good analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.Excellent oral and written communication skills with excellent attention to detail.Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.Evidence of the capability of meeting deadlines and working under pressure.
- At least three years of highly technical and progressively responsible work experience in a computer related field including experience with Linux Server Operating Systems Administration, Web Services.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of enterprise hardware and software.Familiarity with disaster recovery planning and testing.The ability to troubleshoot issues affecting hardware, operating systems and applications.Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
- At least five years of highly technical and progressively responsible experience in the field of Linux Server system administration.Experience with the design, implementation and administration of Linux-based, enterprise-class server infrastructure.Enterprise Server maintenance experience including patch management, software deployment, performance tuning and capacity management.Experience with producing complex designs that meet integration, technical and business requirements.Experience managing technical projects.Experience with process automation utilizing batch, Ansible, Puppet or other related utilities.

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline.Experience with firewall managementExperience with TCP/IP NetworkingExperience with a Help Desk ticketing systems e.g., Jira HelpDesk, HelpSpot.Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x or greater.Experience with Red Hat technologies e.g., OpenShift, CloudForms, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.Experience with CMS e.g., WordPress, Plone.Experience with Kuali Financial System (KFS).Experience with Application Delivery Controllers e.g., Citrix, F5Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle Database.Experience with Server patch management and software deployment tools e.g. Chef, Puppet, Red Hat Satellite, Ansible.Experience with scripting languages e.g., Bash, Python, PERL or other related languages.Experience working with 3rd party vendors to install and maintain applications on Linux servers e.g., Atlassian, PeopleSoft.Experience with Monitoring tools for Linux Servers e.g., Zabbix, Nagios, Cacti, PRTG.Experience Deploying Linux servers to Microsoft AzureExperience working with vulnerability scanners e.g., Nessus, Metasploit, OpenVAS.Knowledge in strategic server and application infrastructure planning at an enterprise level.Experience with the design, implementation and administration of fault tolerant and disaster recovery solutions using clustering, load balancing or other related technologies.Ability to collect and analyze log data for troubleshooting and incident response e.g., Splunk.Demonstrated ability to manage large or complex projects to achieve timely, successful completion.
