The Assistant Director is responsible for the advisement of new and continuing students within the Speech@Emerson, Communication Sciences & Disorders Master’s program. The Assistant Director will communicate with students on a regular basis to track their academic progress through the program. This person will communicate regularly and collaborate closely with the Graduate Program Director, Director of Clinical Education, faculty, and Student Success Advisors to gain a full understanding of advisees’ academic and clinical status. The Assistant Director will maintain student records to ensure all requirements have been documented and fulfilled for graduation, professional certification, and program accreditation. This role will advise students experiencing academic difficulties, including those on probation and/or suspension, and will make referrals to appropriate Emerson College service units. In addition, this role will facilitate the administration and grading of master’s comprehensive exams.

The Assistant Director will play an operational role in approving status changes, petitions, and reinstatement’s into the program. This person will be responsible for reviewing and making decisions on foundational coursework and general education requirements. The Assistant Director will play a key role at each on-campus Immersion, participating in program sessions, meeting with student advisees, and continuing to advance the advising and Immersion experience. This person will support operational aspects of clinical placements ensuring sites meet Emerson College qualifications. The Assistant Director will be expected to problem-solve, and demonstrate thoughtful, strategic, and student-focused decision making, and be willing to evolve and grow the advising model.

Primary Duties, Responsibilites, and Tasks Required Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment)

-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including editing and proofreading.
-Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
-Proficiency with Microsoft Office and presentation software.
-Fluent with webinar technology (i.e. Zoom, WebEx, GoToMeeting, and Skype).

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment)

Master’s degree with national certification in speech-language pathology and Massachusetts state licensure preferred.

If the person in this role does not possess a master’s in speech-language pathology, the candidate must be willing to learn extensively about specific requirements of the speech-language pathology profession.

Required Prior Work Experience

-Demonstrated ability to interact with students, administrators, faculty, and other team members.
-Able to work flexible hours to accommodate advisees’ in different time zones.
-Able to work occasional nights, weekends, and all Speech@Emerson program Immersions.
-Able to present effectively to small and large groups and to work productively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
-Able to handle sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
-Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, with demonstrated ability and comfort to handle multiple tasks and projects.
-Able to exercise sound judgment, work independently and employ decision making skills.

Individual Work Activities

-Advise and consult with students on the SLP profession.
-Meet each semester with students as part of an assigned advising caseload to monitor completion of program portfolio documents, discuss SLP-related topics and to ensure academic requirements are being met.
-Consult with the Graduate Program Director, Student Success Advisors, and faculty to identify and document student challenges and progress.
-Monitor student’s progress, track advisees on probation and performance improvement plans.
-Partner with the Director of Clinical Education to provide academic updates and receive progress reports on advisee’s clinical placements.
-Partner with Student Success to develop and maintain plans of study.
-Collaborate with institutional service units to ensure students have a positive and streamlined experience.
-Partner with the Graduate Program Director to approve petitions for course enrollment, status changes, reinstatement, readmission, and fulfillment of graduation requirements.
-Support and participate in scheduling using enrollment decisions and plans of study.
-Partner with 2U and CSD personnel to advise, develop and provide orientation feedback to ensure policies, protocols and program requirements are being updated and met.
-Oversee the coordination and facilitate the administration and grading of student Comprehensive exams.
-Lead exit interview sessions, providing students with information about how to submit documentation to adhere to standards for certification and licensure.

Job Duties

Individual Work Activities

-Interpret and apply academic criteria to determine an applicant’s Speech@Emerson admissions eligibility to be admitted to the program.
-Understand admission system(s), processes, protocols and the academic review portal.
-Review and analyze course descriptions and syllabi, and other documentation to evaluate foundational level (advance standing) coursework, observation hours and general educational requirements.
-Represent the program at school events, conferences, and serve as a Speech@Emerson representative for prospective and current student webinars.
-Maintain currency on admissions requirements, new and current student enrollments each term, course changes, program processes and policies, term schedules and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) guidelines.

-Partner with the Director of Clinical Programs to assess placement site qualifications, and attend virtual placement site visits.
-Collate and store feedback and evaluations from students and clinical placement sites.
-Attend all relevant meetings, participate in committee work, maintain records, and manage database systems as required.
-Support program needs and participate in ongoing process and operations improvements.

-Participate in on-campus Immersions by coordinating sessions, facilitating and leading forums, and meeting with advisees during their time on campus.
-Work with CSD leadership to evolve and inform Immersion sessions, outcomes and the overall student experience.
-Provide planning, logistic and coordination support as needed.
