Working with our dedicated faculty and classified professionals, the new Director, Fire Academy will champion our students’ quest to improve their lives and their communities. Under direct supervision of the Dean of Instruction, Applied Technology, the Director, Fire Academy will be responsible for the following:

  • Lead, organize, support and manage educational planning, instructional schedule, and program development for fire technology programs in accordance with the college’s mission, goals, objectives, strategic plan, and regional accreditation, while maintaining regulatory compliance;
  • Provide leadership for staff development activities to assure the realization of the long-term institutional goals to acquire and maintain state of the art technology and equipment in the classroom and for curricular development;
  • Oversee all financial activities of the program including management, audit of budget, and other related fiscal activities;
  • Identify, develop, coordinate, and implement grant opportunities and special projects that promote and expand funding sources to support the department and programs;
  • Oversee the preparation of course schedules and ensure they are distributed appropriately and in a timely manner;
  • Monitor load and other district restrictions of work hours;
  • Work direct with the Dean and assigned programs to plan for curriculum additions, modifications, and deletions to meet the needs of the community and maintain compliance with the Education Code and Title 5;
  • Provide leadership for and assist faculty (where appropriate) in the development and assessment of course, program, and institutional student learning outcomes to improve student learning within their programs of responsibility;
  • Assign, review work, maintain standards, coordinate activities, evaluate performance, recommend the selection of new employees, act on employee problems, and recommend disciplinary action as appropriate;
  • Serve as an advocate for Public Safety programs to internal and external stakeholders and representative to Statewide and local organizations to ensure that Fresno City College (FCC) is on the cutting edge of Fire Technology and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training education;
  • Facilitate meetings with the Fire Technology Advisory Committee and fire service related agencies and organizations;
  • Attend professional conferences and designated Fire Technology agency training, advisory committee, regional and State meetings to stay current on public safety issues and curricula;
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with local schools, educational agencies, public agencies, business organizations, and the community to promote and support the program and its students;
  • Develop outreach and support services, and participate in recruitment of students to Fire Technology programs;
  • Develop, prepare, implement, and monitor Instructional Service Agreements (ISA’s) with local agencies;
  • Oversee the State Fire Marshall Accreditation Review and any other applicable State reports;
  • Develop and oversee the maintenance of Fire Technology facilities and resources including ensuring compliance with all applicable Federal, State, local, and college safety requirements;
  • Perform additional administrative duties and services as requested and assigned; and
  • Assist in the advancement of the institution’s vitality and growth.
Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned master’s degree from an accredited college or university; AND
  • One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment; OR
  • Possession of a valid California Community College Supervisory Credential.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Five years of full-time paid professional fire related experience with a background in teaching Fire Technology and California State Fire Marshal Fire Officer courses;
  • Experience equivalent to at least five years of full-time teaching and/or professional experience in any of the disciplines taught in the division;
  • An earned degree in Fire Administration, or Fire Technology;
  • Teaching/coordinating experience in a Basic Fire Academy;
  • Possess or qualify for a California Fire Service Training and Education Master Instructors Certificate;
  • Possess a valid Class B California Driver’s License;
  • A passion to drive the profession toward positive change through training and standards;
  • Demonstrated effective communication both oral and written, collaboration and delegating skills;
  • Ability to use software tools to generate and analyze data to assist in the decision making process;
  • Have a strong understanding of the administration of Fire Technology programs, including an understanding of how technology can aid their delivery;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds, including faculty, students, classified professionals, and administrators;
  • Evidence of effective planning in the management, supervision, and evaluation of the work of others;
  • Management experience in public safety/Fire Technology related fields;
  • Knowledge of Fire Technology regulatory requirements;
  • Experience in teaching, coordinating, supporting, scheduling, and staffing both lecture and laboratory classes;
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire and administer external funding for support of programs in the department;
  • Ability to use organizational skills that enable the performance of duties in a timely fashion with attention to detail.
Conditions of Employment 223 duty days and 22 vacation days for a total of 245 days. Salary and Benefits

Salary is $98,605 – $124,063 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,082 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

Additional Information about the Position

This is an academic management position, exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, with responsibility for formulation and implementation of district policies, regulations, budget decisions, and supervision of personnel including assignment of work, evaluation of performance, adjusting grievances, recommending hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion and termination.
