DESCRIPTION

Under physician supervision, the Athletic Trainer (AT) will support the sports medicine practice by providing patient healthcare, support/education and community outreach.

Primary responsibilities: Provides casting services ordered by the physician including casting /taping/splinting, DME fitting/ordering, wound debriding, suture removal, crutch/cane training, supportive hardware adjustments, and fracture reductions. Will provide athletic taping and other duties as requested with-in scope of practice. Maintain medical supplies inventory and ordering.

Additional responsibilities include: a clinical component of physician support and athlete care, an outreach component of on-site athlete/coach education and/or event/game coverage, and an administrative component of assisting with projects and events. In the medical clinic, the AT will assist with day to day operations including: rooming patients, assist in the patient intake process, and retrieval of necessary records relevant to the patient visit. The AT provides physician support by assisting with patient prep and education, instruction in home exercise programs and return-to-activity protocols, and conducts strength, flexibility and biomechanical assessments, as required.

Assist with the daily administration of clinic duties such as: returning patient phone calls, communications, scheduling patient appointments, entering appropriate information into the Epic EMR, equipment/supply management, cleaning/disinfecting the environment and other tasks as assigned. Outreach for the AT consists of delivering community outreach/sports education programs to student athletes/parents and coaches, etc. May provide medical coverage for athletic events/games sponsored by UC San Diego Health. May also provide athletic training assistance for selected high school sports programs or athletic clubs.

S/he will work independently as assigned, or in collaboration with athletic trainers, physicians, and other staff in delivering healthcare services for patients. S/he will be expected to establish or continue to facilitate a working relationship with those athletic clubs or teams where s/he is involved in delivering sports medicine care. The AT also assists with program and department projects and events, planning support for various athlete screening exams, and support for educational conferences and community event coverage. Participates in selected research projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area.

  • Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

  • A minimum of three (3+) or more years of relevant experience.

  • Strong computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Orthopedic Technologist certified (OTC).
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Three (3+) or more years of orthopedic clinic experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
