DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Student Retention and Success Departments within Student Affairs play a leadership role in creating and providing programs and services that foster student success and persistence and programs that develop personal, academic, and professional skills and relationships needed fora successful transition into diverse and global communities.

This includes promotion and expansion of existing Student Affairs retention initiatives and the transformation of existing departments and programs under the oversight of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of services to support student success and retention in response to the Chancellor's strategic plan to improve retention and graduation rates.

Student Retention and Success includes the departments of Global Education, Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP), Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), Student Veterans Resource Center, Chancellor's Associate Scholars Program (CASP), Undocumented Student Support Services, Student Success Programs, Student Retention and Success Business Office, and the administration/AVCs office.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Initiated in Fall 2016, the Student Success Coaching program operates out of a strengths-based framework to provide holistic support for a cohort of students who are the first in their families to attend college. The Student Success Coaching Program is a recognized promising practice which employs evidence and theory-based best practices to catapult students to succeed. We need intentional, caring, innovative and passionate professionals to help students achieve their personal, professional and academic goals.

With direction from the Program Director and the Success Coaching Leadership Team, the Student Success Coach (Coach) is a member of a team that uses proactive and appreciative approaches to provide personalized individual and group support to help students succeed at UC San Diego. The Coach will work individually with a designated cohort of incoming and continuing students to facilitate student success, retention, and campus integration through targeted outreach, coaching, mentoring, and monitoring of study management plans while connecting students to high impact practices that exist across the campus.

The Coach functions to provide scholastic direction in individual and group formats and directs students to campus and community resources that will assist students in maintaining or enhancing academic success. The Coach will serve as a liaison to services and resources on campus and works in direct collaboration with UCSD’s six undergraduate colleges and their academic, student affairs, and residence life units as well as with fellow departments in the Student Retention and Success Unit.

  • Overtime, evening and/or weekend work may be required to participate in programming to accommodate student schedules & campus events.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. Knowledge of theories and principles of higher education and student development, with ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated skills in student development, counseling, and leadership theories; verified ability to develop positive mentoring/coaching relationships with a diverse student population.

  • Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.

  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement. Skill using effective pedagogical strategies for designing, planning, and implementing academic support programs for underrepresented, multicultural and other non-traditional college students.

  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs.

  • Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs. Ability to work compile and analyze data, and prepare summary and or statistical reports and instructional materials with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major emphasis in a related field and two (2) years of related experience in a college-level student support services, preferably in a learning skills service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's Degree in a related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality. Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor while interacting with variety of individuals and groups at the university community from diverse socioeconomic to cultural/ethnic backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated presentation skills and experience conducting courses, workshops and seminars to various audiences. Knowledge of outreach strategies, and program evaluation techniques.

  • Verified skill in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational, cultural, and social programs in a higher education environment that reflect the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Strong analytical skills for identifying areas for improvement and developing innovative solutions. Ability to recognize problems, conflicts or impact to others, research options, present alternatives, implement solutions and follow through to ensure goals are met.

  • Solid organizational skills with ability to set priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines and goals. Aptitude to work independently, with minimal direction, in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a large, complex, multi-disciplinary academic environment, within a major research university, including familiarity with campus-wide offices, administrative contacts, campus structure and resources.

  • Knowledge of and experience in peer educator/mentor training, strengths-based approaches, identity-conscious strategies, and proactive outreach.
