DescriptionThe Women's Center was founded in 1972 a space and resource open to all Tufts students and community members interested in topics and issues broadly related to the experiences of women, the impacts of sexism and misogyny, the damaging impacts of an enforced gender binary, and the role of gender in all of our lives. One of five identity-based Centers within the schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering, the Women’s Center particularly investigates gender at the intersections of other identities such as race, sexuality, class, and citizenship status. In collaboration with students, staff, faculty, and alums, the Women’s Center staff provide programming, advising, information, and other resources from a wide variety of perspectives. Center staff also provide academic and personal advising, mentorship, and guidance to students, and the Women’s Center is a meeting place for the diverse student, faculty, and staff groups that exist at Tufts. While the Women's Center's primary purpose is to serve undergraduate students, it also offers information, event opportunities, and resources for graduate students, faculty, staff, alums, and parents.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Director of the Women’s Center serves as a campus resource and educates the community on emerging issues and initiatives regarding gender, feminism, and women. The Director provides support for undergraduate students, as well as graduate students, faculty, staff, alums, and parents, and leads a variety of student and academic programs, including programs related to social justice. The Director manages and oversees the Women’s Center in all aspects and is responsible for the strategic planning, administration, and leadership of the Center, including establishing its mission and vision. In partnership with colleagues and student leaders, the Director creates and maintains an atmosphere within the Center that serves as an an intentional space in which students engage in ongoing dialogue around issues pertaining to gender and identity. The Director also serves as a leader in understanding issues of gender, gender expressions, sexuality, race, citizenship, identity more broadly, and/or social justice within and beyond the Women’s Center community. They work closely with students and student organizations to build leadership skills, plan events, develop relevant programming and initiatives, and address and respond to student concerns and crises. As a member of the Division of Student Affairs manager staff, the Director collaborates with other University offices and departments both within and beyond the Division of Student Affairs to provide educational and identity-based resources, including partnering with the Africana Center, Asian American Center, Latino Center, LGBT Center, International Center, FIRST Resource Center, Health Promotion and Prevention, Student Accessibility Services, and the University Chaplaincy. The Director will serve on a variety of school- and University-wide committees and working groups and will take on special projects and other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs, including participating in the on-call team for the Division.Some nights and weekend commitments are required.


QualificationsBasic Requirements:
  • Master’s degree required, preferably in higher education, counseling, gender and/or queer theory, immigration studies, or another related field
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in education, student affairs, community organization, social work, program development, or in other learning or student-facing environments, preferably within a selective university or liberal arts college environment
  • Superb judgment and demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team; proven ability to develop and maintain productive, collegial working relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, and alums
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with thorough attention to detail and consistency; ability to set and attain goals while working both collaboratively and independently on various projects
  • Expertise in and an appreciation for intersectional feminist approaches to student support services; strong background in women’s and gender studies, and a nuanced understanding of various models for women’s and gender resource centers; an understanding of the cultural constructions of gender as it intersects with race, class, ethnicity, sexual identity, religion, and ability
  • Evidence of a firm commitment to social justice and transparency within a community of diverse gender, gender expression, racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and other identities; awareness of how the college-age development of identities impacts social justice and activism
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, imagination, and effectiveness in developing educational and community programs; demonstrated commitment to student advocacy and proven experience working with students, staff, faculty, alums, and community groups
  • A demonstrated understanding of strategic planning, experience utilizing data and assessment to inform decision making, and effective program advocacy skills are all preferred


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience evaluating, refreshing and updating administrative policies, office systems, and budgets within an educational setting strongly preferred
  • Experience working effectively with young adults/adolescents, families, faculty, senior administration and staff members within a similar higher education setting is strongly preferred
  • Strategic leadership and management skills, including the ability to recruit and develop outstanding staff and support a team of colleagues within a demanding office environment are a plus
  • A demonstrated understanding of strategic planning, experience utilizing data and assessment to inform decision making, and effective program advocacy skills are all preferred
  • Experience successfully engaging campus climate issues through co-curricular student-focused programs and leadership development a plus
  • Awareness of how social identities impact the experience of college students and an understanding of how misogyny, sexism, and gender-based violence operate on a college campus
  • Terminal degree in relevant academic field preferred; relevant teaching and topical research experience a plus

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

Some night and weekend commitments, including participation in the administrator-on-call rotation, required.
