This is a supplemental administrative position for a two-year period (8 quarters), served by a faculty member in addition to regular faculty responsibilities and instructional load, for five-hours per week each quarter (up to 55 hours/quarter).


The Department Lead emerges from the faculty to develop and lead departmental faculty in instructional strategy, subject-matter expertise, and curricular oversight to create an inspiring learner-centered environment to prepare students for successful completion of the academic and practical curriculum of the department.


Lead and manage the department congruent with the vision and mission of the institution. Ensure quality of education by assessing and managing the courses and curriculum within the department and across the college. Work with other institutional leaders to ensure that the departmental and clinical program expectations and outcomes are aligned.


Departmental Leadership

  1. Develop and maintain department level mission and outcomes that are aligned with the college mission and goals.

  2. Hold regular meetings with departmental faculty in an individual setting

  3. Hold monthly departmental meetings with all departmental faculty

  4. Assist with special projects that relate to the objectives of the department

  5. Participates in assessment of departmental objectives

  6. Based on outcomes assessment, develop and implement action plans

  7. Facilitate the intentional integration of co-curricular systems within the college

  8. Oversee and manage all functional and operational needs of the department, including equipment, resources, and facilities usage

  9. Communicate departmental needs to appropriate channels in OAA and the college

  10. Assess instructional and curricular mastery based on rubrics, grading, and outcomes

  11. Work with faculty to align learning outcomes to program outcomes

  12. Review and revise syllabi with faculty

  13. Onboard new faculty

  14. Use assessment data to drive changes in curricular or instructional methodology

    Administrative Responsibilities

  15. To facilitate communication between faculty, students, and administrators

  16. Serve on the Academic Planning Group and Curriculum Committee

  17. Coordinate with Health Center administration to ensure that the content and expectations of the department and the clinical experience are congruent.

  18. Maintain department files where copies of all correspondence specific to the department are kept

  19. To participate in ongoing institutional self-study process

  20. Responsible to coordinate the maintenance of equipment and materials available for use in the classrooms.

  21. Review course evaluation feedback with OAA to create awareness in key areas of strength and improvement

  22. Development and management of department budget

    Research & Scholarship

  23. Lead department research studies with involvement of other faculty members

  24. Support faculty engagement in independent research and case studies

  25. Represent the college at conferences and seminars through presentations, lectures and sessions

  26. Oversee the faculty in relation to their research activities, including collaborative research initiatives


  • Assist the OAA in the development of the quarterly schedule
  • Report weekly on department activities

    Education, Training and/or Experience

  • Terminal Degree (DC, PhD, MD, ND, DO, etc)
  • Seven years equivalent experience in practice/ profession/ teaching
  • Associate Rank or equivalent experience
  • Business or academic leadership experience
  • Subject-matter expertise in the department area
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage and delegate multiple and varied tasks with frequent high levels of urgency or sensitivity
  • Ability to work collaboratively and foster strong team environment
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills, as well as a high level of sophistication in social and professional settings

    1. Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.

    2. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.

    3. Must be able to lift 25 lbs., retrieving and placing materials on high shelves and on floor-level shelves; standing, walking, carrying, grasping, hearing, seeing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
